I broke my screen (again)

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

I broke my screen (again)

Post by Kurt_ »

Well I turned it on to do my daily testing while waiting for my SNES to arrive (I'm very excited and can't wait to start!) and it sparked. A nice orange spark right between the regulator (The one ben uses for +5V for the LED's) and the little surface mount component beside it.

I did a bunch of crap to it, soldered this there, that over there, everywhere, and eventually I broke it. At first the screen was displaying in black and white with no sound. (And instead of a black back-lit screen, it was white when there was no input.)

I figure unsoldering the regulator one more time might fix it. I hasn't hurt the other times I was trying to replace it with a TI regulator. I resoldered it and the screen wouldn't work at all.
(Note: I'm not 100% sure this directly effected the screen's problem.)

However, I'm still getting +3V from both regulators. (I thought it outputted +5, maybe this is the problem) EDIT: The LED regulator is now outputting 7.9V. This is a problem, I'm assuming.

I don't want to jump the fuse, incase I fry it, until I know that the problem isn't a short somewhere. EDIT: The fuse is still giving me 0.6 ohms of resistance, so I'm assuming it's intact

NOTE: THe regulator output trace is a bit mangled and came off the board a bit. But there is still a connection, and a fine one at that)

(Boy I'm sure mangling this thing! At least all the possible problems for a verge screen will be fixed and documented for future screen-goers!)

Any suggestions?

can i see a pic of this please?
orange spark is bad...very very bad... i wouldnt jump the fuse yet.

Pictures: THe purple circle is the surface mount in question. I'm sorry I can't get a better picture, the camera won't focus properly. It's times like these I like a nice munual focus.

WARNING: These are large pictures.

I don't know what I did, but now the screen/backlight work fine. However, it's still B/W and no sound.

Why no sound? That seems to be the major problem.

I have a erason for double posting/bumpnig this thread.

Beside the screen, I found a part labelled like this:

Code: Select all

___

100
16V
___
It's like the one beside the regulator, but it isn't the same one.

Is this just a scrap from the transformer from my scrap pile? Or is this a vital component of colour/sound that lost it's place somehow?

That's a 100uF capacitor. It's probably surface-mount. By all means try it, it can't really hurt things any more then the are now :P

Well I doubt it's that. I'm pretty sure that's from the transformer.

HOWEVER:

Neither the Brightness/Volume Buttons do ANYTHING. Nor do they display anything on the screen. The problem is between the buttons and wherever the buttons go.

EDIT:

I touched something, and it worked, sound and all, for a split second. I tried and I tried, but I can't quite put my finger on it! :P (Sorry, I had to make a bad finger joke :D )

Blurry Board

The area in question has 3 capacitors, one for red, blue and green/yellow.

When you touch them you get a vertically scrolling bar of that colour.

I touched something back there are it did 2 things:

1) Produced colour
2) Produced sound

But it still doesn't work, and I can't make it work again.
