basic supplies portable ps2 mini

Post by 75UR15 »

I know this may be the stupidest question asked here, but since I like to ask the stupid question and I don't know, could anyone tell me what basic parts are needed (besides the ps2 mini) to build a portable ps2. This would not have to be "portable" in the sense of convenience, I will have space to lay it out, I just need a low power screen (maybe psone) and a battery supply that will run both (preferably for 6 hours per charge or more). The idea it to get something working started, then to make it easier to move later. This will include (even finished) not building the control in, but holding a normal control separate from the box. Any help for construction (soldering if needed) instructions would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help anyone might have.

lolol....that's never going to happen.

basic parts? Well yeah, you need a screen, system, and controller. The rest is up to you.

Li-Poly batteries will likely give you that kind of run-time. But you will be droping about $200 for the batteries, so it might not be worth it.

I would aim for about a 1.5 - 2 hour battery life with a PS2 portable. You could use several 7.2v r/c car batteries in parellel but it would be bulky.

There's not really a good way to do it, the PS2 just basically sucks power.

I guess to rephrase that question, the battery ben used
(I remembered seeing a Lithium-ion battery pack at Wal-Mart. It's intended to power portable DVD players and the like, but all I cared about was how it outputted 9 volts and stored 5400mA of power!)
I found with 7.7 volts and 5400mA, would that be strong enough? And maybe an easier question to answer, would it be possible to "hack" the battery to have a standard outlet (so for the time I could just plug it in)? That is probably an even more stupid question, but I have minimal electric knowledge and can't afford to screw up a perfectly good ps2 until I know a little more.

Not true. Even Li-Poly won't give you that kind of run time. I have some really nice ones (well over $200 worth) and it would take a massive stack of them to get that kind of battery life. To give you an idea, the stack would easily equal the console in size.

I've used that exact battery in the past but had to drop it because of its low current discharge rate. It would NOT last anything close to 6 hours. Even Ben himself stated the system's draw was average (actually it's over) 1.9amps WITHOUT a screen/speakers. on a 5.4amp battery that's less than 3 hours. I went to great lengths to extend my PSTwo battery life and I got a draw of ~2.7amps with a 3hour+ battery life. That's really the best you're going to do. Additionally, the system will not run off 7.7v. It requires at least 8.3v to power up.

Here is the question that will get me "fired" from the forum for being "unportable". If I could get a battery that ran 12V at 140A with an inverter to take it down to 8.5 volts, about how long would just the system run? I know this sounds crazy, but I wasn't looking for "portable" just movable power supply, and after searching, the easiest/safest method (thanks to radio shack) was taking a full sized lawn mower battery, (165A - 140A depending on "start") and "hacking" a power inverter (chop off the end and direct connect to pins) to make a "plug" for the ps2 slim. The inverter will provide correct volts, and fuse for error prevention (no $200 oops!). The screen I was thinking about so far comes from toys-r-us, plugs straight into the vid/power cable on the ps2 slim, and then provides like connections on the opposite side. It does NOT come with an adapter so may I assume that the ps2 adapter is meant to power both?
