Best game to test controls with?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Best game to test controls with?

Post by CJWJ »

Hi folks,

I'm wondering what games are the best to check if all the buttons on a portable are working. (in my case, i didn't write down what color flatcable was the one for L/R 1/2 <sigh> )

I'm thinking of some practice screens for 1 vs 1 fighting games. Tekken would be a good example. But I don't want to change the "Lowkick" "high Kick" screen blips into the real buttons.

Or! Maybe someone has heard of a homebrew PSX image that just displays the controllers pressed keys?

Hmm... Crash Team Racing uses basically all the buttons.

There's always PaRappa the Rapper, and its PSX sequel (whatever it was). Wow the games are actually good for something after all! :shock:*

*warning: I hate those "press the button at the right time" games (like DDR and PaCrappa) with a vengance. It's boring and frustrating to either sit there mindlessly pressing buttons on the controller, or dancing in the middle of an arcade making a jackass out of yourself. Play a strategy game, go outside, jump off things, do SOMETHING besides make a mockery of yourself!

And this rage was actually quite tame concidering I'm doing my own Foamy marathon. :lol:

APE ESCAPE!!! You get to test the buttons, d-pad, and the analog sticks too. Also, its a great game, and you should play it.

Hi guys!

Uhm, I'm not real good with quoting people (especially multiple people) so I'll just answer questions inline.

@Jeroen:
Nope, not yet. But i'm getting there soon. First I have a school-project that really needs to get finished. How I hate deadlines...

@atkafighter:
I dont have Ape-Escape, but having read a lot of playstation threads, it sure is clear that this game was a major selling point back in the ps1-days :) My portable (when finished) won't have analog sticks. Basically this is because I'm having the d-pad (left) and fire-buttons (right) centered on the sides of the LCD screen (will look great when all the decals are on).
I'm building my PP (peepee? uhm, need to review that name :)) in landscape style (GBA original style/Sega Nomad). Because of this, below the LCD is just no room to put analogs, and when I shift 'em outwards (bottom of portable, left/right of screen) they get in the way of the digital controls (which I use all the time).

@bicosp:
I got Parappa. I even got a customized Vib Ribbon (with the original japanesey music replaced with recent favorite Drum n Bass tracks :) The levels are painfully difficult.) That's a great idea actually! I didn't think of that. Thank you bicostp! But ehm, I didn't know Parappa had a sequel :)

Oh, something comes to mind. A friend (who I am converting to build a portable <grin> ) has Abe's Oddysy (or whatever it's spelled). I remember it having a controls screen that lights up all the buttons on an on screen controller (i think). Little Hazy.

I think I got enough leads to get my buttons sorted. Thanks everyone!
