Sound Cancelling Headphones

Ah sound cncellers. When you put them on all the idiots around you go away.

However it comes at a price. A very hefty price. The cheapest factory sound cancelers I have ever found were $70. My friend has a pair, and they're pretty good. However I want to build something cheaper, something that I can use on other pairs of headphones if the ones I am currently using bite the dust.

I found <a href="http://www.headwize.com/projects/noise_prj.htm">this article</a> while digging through Hackaday, and I think I might try making it. All the parts look fairly simple to get, but I am not too sure about some things. It would be preferable to be able to get all the parts at Rat Shack, mainly because of Digikey's $25 minimum order.

Why?

1. I'm a cheaparse. I can't see myself spending $70+ on a pair of headphones.

2. I like putting things together like this. I built one of those "light organ" things from a kit before, and building a sound canceller circuit from instructions is roughly the same.

3. I already have some of the parts. I have this huge box full of old relays, some capacitors, resistors, switches, probably a project case, etc...

Of course for a case I'd use either a RS projet ase or an Altoids tin. Gotta love those Altoids tins.

I'm not too sure about this part:

NE5532 dual audio op-amp

Is there some sort of part from RS that can be used for this? All the other parts are just capacitors and resistors and switches and pots and stuff like that, all very basic.

No clue.
I was thinking about making a new pair of headphones with my exsisting broken ones that I have lazily packaged taped together.

I'm pretty sure there's a dual audio op amp at radioshack...there's definitely some kind of op amp there, for sure

they've got quad op amps, a dual op amp, and a single op amp....I'm pretty sure you can use those

Oh man, I have those Bose noise cancelling headphones, they are niiiiiiiice...but expensive. THANK YOU SANTA

I have the bose ones! The other thing, I saw a $15 pair of powered noise cancelling headphones at CVS just last week!

I read that a while ago and had most of the parts laying around, so I decided to give it a go. I ordered the opamps, headphone jacks, and a couple pots from mouser along with some other parts I was getting, etched a board for it, and put everything together. It works well for low frequencies, but don't expect to be blocking out music or other people talking. It almost completely blocked out any low frequency background noise like airconditioners, refridgerators, etc. Everything else was only slightly more quiet, and either a little "fuzzy" or more defined depending on what it was. Using a different opamp may have different effects though, so let us know how it turns out when you're done

You know I thought this looked farmilar. Hotdog-Cart asked about head-phones that he could use, that he could play really loud and no one around him wouldn't hear.

The solution that one person suggested was that he take construction grade headset, you know the kind that just mute out the noise. Then just install speakers... maybe a like ear-bud size in the covers. Seriouslly those headsets can't be more then $30.
