C64 laptop project
If anyone is trying to make a c64 laptop, let's go ahead and collaborate to try to make them good. I have a 2-D design class I'm taking in college, so it'll serve me really well in Photoshop, Illustrator and the like. In fact, I could try to help w/ ideas regarding the 5.25" disk drive, etc. Do we want to make a portable that looks like some old-a$$ thing you'd use in school, or something a bit more streamlined? I don't think we have much of a choice in the matter. My guess is that we could try to not make it THAT thick, but it'd have to be REALLY ******* thick in order to hold all the parts, accomodate for the mobo, etc, unless our mobo expert can craft a really good mobo, and then we may get our wish. I also want to not only use it for C64 games, but maybe I could run Windows/Linux on it as well, just so I could brag about having an online-enabled C64 laptop. Basically, a dualboot. I know MS is wonky on dual-boots, but I think it could be done.
My other dream project is an Apple ][ laptop done the same way, only a triple-boot with Apple ][, Classic Mac OS, and Mac OS X. I'd probably do a CF solution with the Apple ][ and a SuperDrive (if one can be found for relatively cheap) for the other 2 OSes. Could I do my Apple ][ laptop first and do a Commodore next, or is that next-to-impossible-without-a-droid-who-could-have-better-fine-motor-skills?

I was thinking of this and with the c64 you have a few options
There was a 3.5" disk drive for the c64 in the later years and if i remember corectly u can use it like the standard 5.25" disk you just dump the games onto it from the pc and your go it.
You can use a harddrive or CF but games need to be patched for this.
For a cool laptop design you should go look at the kids laptops the $20 ones
They are built well look very stylish with keyboard and has that small 2x16 character lcd on them you know the educational laptop toys
You just have to rewire the keyboard with tacttile switches and enlarge the lid for the LCD but it would look professional.

Ok here is my suggests about making a C64 laptop.
Use the C64 DTV. Has everything a C64 had, in a manner of speaking.
I'd go with a PSone screen at the smallest, but likely the screen Ben used for his laptop would be better.
Laptop/compact style keyboard.
Of course the key problem with the C64 DTV as mentioned in the past in that you can't connect a cart slot to it so you're left with the disk drive. The disk drive is a big problem as the 5 1/4" drive is big, heavy and likely consumes a lot of power. Until the Compactflash card equivlent to the disk drive is fully working it's just not possible.
If you want to try anyways, there is a disk drive for the Commodore 64 that is a 3 1/2" floppy. But only place I've seen them is on ebay and going for over $80.

Well it's just if you could connect a cart to the C64 DTV then working around the whole disk drive issue wouldn't be that hard. But as you don't have that option and the cheaper disk drives are big your kind of stuck, either playing the onboard games, or waiting for the DTV v2 to come out of the C64.NiN^_^NiN wrote:Sparkfist i wouldn't worry about the cart games there wasn't very many released and they were all released on tape anyway

Now im not sure this is right been a while since i done anything with c64 hardware.
But i remember that you can't use the cart port cause it works differently than the expansion port.
I remember that altho a flash cart has been made for the c64 the problem is that the disk and tape games are to big to use that port.
I don't remember why tho but im sure that there is a set limit on the cart port hence why the flash carts didn't get popular.
Altho i could have this mixed up with some other hardware so im not to sure
But on the laptop case i say get one of these:

As you can see its thick enough for a c64 laptop and its also light enough when u think of the componets and its solid its a good case plus it looks cool
There are thinner ones but this is what i ment by kids laptops

OK, that's cool guys. I was truly thinking about getting a DTV for that very purpose. However, I'd rather have a kick-a** case that doesn't look, feel, or act like a kiddie laptop. If there were actual laptop CASES (ie sans guts), I might be inclined to get 3 of them, use one for the C64 laptop, one for an Apple I laptop, and use one for a project of mine where I build the killer gaming rig laptop I don't have now, and inherently more upgradeable.

I allready have a DTV2 and plan to build a portable (allready began but I don't have a screen by now (at least no screen that's working))
If you're planning to use a 3,5" drive you could just rebuild the 1581 controller and use one(has been done before look here: http://www.students.tut.fi/~leinone3/dcn2692/ )
I hope we get one working C64p.
And the Atari forum should be renamed to Atari 2600/ C64 forum

Well if there is a way to get a 3 1/2" floppy working then there is no problem. Yay! I guess this means I need to get me a C64 DVT 2.0 and snatch up that spare 3 1/2" floppy drive I have downstairs.
*o*, Nin Nin has been visiting every now and again. It's just unlike some members he only post in threads that are of interst to him, and that and the pressing time he has.
P.S. I just remembered that I have a old Laptop that has a floppy drive. Now I'm wondering is do you think it would have a lower draw and be only 5v conpared to its desktop equivilent?

Yeah, laptop can be kind of think. My Toshiba Satelllite Pro is about 2 inches (closed), You can find other's that are thicker, or just buy something like what I have. If you are going to use a laptop case look for old/broken laptops on ebay.BJWanlund wrote:OK, could I use an OLD laptop case for the re-imagining? It's be big enough to put a C64 disk drive into.

Yeah and the Genesis and SNES were rivals too, but until people cried over the fact they couldn't figure out that the Genesis topics go in the SNES forum, we had one for both.
The fact they were rivals doesn't change the fact that the basic philosophy they followed are more simalar then dissimalar. Both 8bit computers/gaming consoles, and both very popular. I don't think we need a new forum esspally becuase there are very few topics about the Commodore 64 to begin with.
If or when the stuation comes in which we have a good number of Commodore 64 and Amiga threads then we can see about asking Ben to make a Commodore forum. But that time isn't now.
