How to run a psone screen at 12v

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

How to run a psone screen at 12v

Post by MaDnEsS »

alright now that it works i will post everthing i did in pics( for this you first will have needed to complete the LED mod)

first things firt remove power to baclight(its not needed anymore)

1.Replace it with this one 5v dc/ dc converter which i will post a link to its at the top of the screen board on the front) ON the front its a lot easyer to solder everything if the pins are facing the back.

Pic from front

pic from the back(you will have to scatch a place on the back to support the dc-dc, it also give you a place to solder)

2. to prevent your screen from frying at 12v you need to solder a resistor onto the dc dc even so it makes it a 7.4-5v dc dc so basicly your setting it up so you have the 12v go through the dc/dc right to the screen like so. than wire it in seiries with whatever else your powering with 12v.

3.Waring i suges to you you put in a fuse so in case you did something wrong you will not fry everything. one last thing Solder everthing exactly the way i did in my pic.

Sorry Madness, but I don't really see a point to this thread, it's pretty obvious to anybody on how to run it with 12V. Plus it would be much simpler to just run the DCDC directly after the battery.

First nobody runs the screen at 12Vs because those batteries generally have a lower capacity than, say, 7.2V batterys. They also don't do it to save from having to get a voltage regulator.

Secondly you don't need exactly 7.5V, 7.2-9V will do just fine. And have you ever heard of an adjustable switching regulator?

sorry to say, but sniper_spike, you're being an idiot. Many consoles (including the GC and DC) require a 12V min. for operation.

I never said anything about consoles, simply the screen. But then if your running both on one 12V battery, you could simply have two outputs from it, one to a DCDC to the screen, and the other to the console. So going back to one of my points, it would be easier to just run a DCDC off the battery instead of on the screen. There's a bunch of adjustable DCDC's on TI, do a search.

Pray tell, why would you want to run a N64 off 12v? You do know the 7805 in it runs just fine off 7.2+v?

umm... how does increasing the voltage realy increase playtime? Maybe it'd save some voltage in the dc-dc converter to the 3V line, but it'd also burn up more heat on the 7805 to the 5V line (unless you replaced that with a dc-dc converter too), but even so, it's not as good as just using the extra batteries in parallel.
