need help fixing a 15" lcd

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I had a major power surge at my house, one of the casualties was my gateway 15" lcd monitor

Anyway, I took it apart, and I think the only thing that was damaged was the power supply. I took it out, and I can find 3 things on the power supply board that have been damaged, but I need help to identify them, so I can get ahold of new ones so I can try and fix it.

Heres some pics.

Spot#1 looks like some sort of capacitor that has been cracked and says ru901 next to it on the underside of the board.

Spot#2 Looks like a resistor, and has been severed on one side. it looks like it say r901 next to it on the underside of the board.

Spot#3 I cant really figure out what it is, it looks like part of it is missing, It seems to say f901 near it on the underside of the board.

Any help on how to find these peices, or how to fix this would be helpful, either that, or does anybody know a company I can send it to to get repaired.

Looks to me like they're
1) Pot
2) Resistor
3) Inductor

Ok, so it's not exactly a portable screen as the title implies, but it's pretty much the same technology.

Sponge, Didnt mean to imply it was for a portable, thats why I posted it in forum42 instead of the screen forum.

Gannon any Idea how I can figure out exactly which ones they are so I can buy them? I might be able to scrape the black soot off the resistor and check out the rings, but as for the other two, I'm not sure.

1 looks like a ceramic cap. if you wipe the soot off can you see the values on those?

I know I'm a newb and everything, but to me it looks like spot #1 and spot #3 are ONE thing that broken off. The soot seems to centralize around it, and if you look at the edges of both of them you can see...

#1: the circumference isn't smooth, it almsot looks like a broken resistor

#3: two pieces of something sticking off of it near the center.

Your skills with a mouse must be so precise you don't need to see the pointer to hit your target. There's no other possible explanation! I am in awe of your skills.

Couldn't resist guys...

I would start at the power line, (clean everything off first wiht a q-tip, amke sure everyting is discharged of course) and check everything until you get all the broken components found. I doubt you can find everything broken by just looking.

Wait... I don't see a fuse anywhere, Where's the fuse?! Aren't power supplys supposed to have a fuse right before the plug?

or he could use just the keyboard. Maybe he rocorded a macro of him typing the entire thing!

Nah, actually I can work a computer using only telekinesis kinda like Proffesor X. I dont need a monitor or even a keyboard.

Maybe I should just try and sell it on ebay to someone who will be able to fix it. I'm not sure I can pull it off.

if you know what voltage(s) the PSU supplies, you could just replace it with a different one with the same voltage(s)

i agree, it might be easier, safer, and just as affordable to replace the whole power unit.

DUDES!!! Please at least consider that it might be a resistor that got fried off. #1 and#3 really look like it. If it's fried then there's no problem with trying a Varaible resistor and adjusting the resistance to SEE if it would work. Please at least consider this!

Have you tried using rubbing alcohol to clean up the burnt areas to get a better look at what components are missing?

In order to figure out where to get the power converter, figure out what voltages this outputs. It takes 120vac in right? Take a picture of the connector that goes to the screen, and see if you can see there are any output voltages marked. I'm not sure if that is a power supply for the whole screen, or just the inverter. If it is the inverter, they are commonly found for sale as they are an easy fix to most "broken" LCDs.
