Slicing Your PSone screen (even more)

Ok first off, I've already chopped off the first part of my screen (on the top). This is chopping off even more. And it's probably already been thought of/done.

According to this post HERE, the section in yellow isn't used anymore after the LED mod. If this is true, then you SHOULD be able to chop off this:



If the yellow lines (from the post) are correct, then is there something wrong with cutting the extra 1/4-1/2 inch off (blue line)? Is there something wrong with relocating the one cap (or whatever those little surfacemount things everywhere are) and cutting through the red line?

I'm not going to risk the blue line, but it'd be cool if I could chop off the red line.

Am I just a lost n00blet venturing into enemy waters? Or is this possible? And if it's possible has somebody done it before? (highly likely)

It's risky at best, I'd guess there are plenty of mid-board traces (the PCB is almost definitely multi-layered so there is a lot you don't see.)

I'll go look for a schematic or something. But if it is possible, the board can be cut down to a width of 4 1/4". You can save a 1/4" (roughly) for anyone who is starved of space. But I'm not going to risk it. I'm sort of waiting for somebody else to risk it.

(This is my first portable and if I wreck another screen I will be crucified by my parents)

I can't find anything related to the screen's circuits (who would've guessed? ). Perhaps somebody with a messed up and barely functional screen could try this?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what would you use to cut down a psone screen or any kind of computer board for that matter? All I have is a saw and an x-acto knife. Since my saw sucks I'd probably keep slicing with the xacto knife...but that would take a very lengthy period of time.

I use really realy sharp scissors that are built into my wire stripper....it works great and is very precise...not to mention the easiness of it

Yeah, scissors work great for cutting PCB's, but if you make a really long cut, it might bend the board a lot.

I'm thinking about trimming my NES board, so I will take these ideas into concideration...that is once I can get it running again

I used my grandpa's dremel tool. It cut it extremely fast, but I did slip occasionally. Don't use a dremel without a steady hand.

Please somebody try and see if what I thought up would work.

I was able to chop off the top of the pcb so it's about flush with the top of the lcd. I decided not to mess with the bottom or sides

a Dremel is the best tool to use but you have to have a nice one...

as for cutting the board: the PSOne screen PCB is NOT multilayered-it's a standard 2 sided board. You should be able to cut all that off without a problem. You have to make sure however, that the far upper right ICs (and theire external components) aren't cut or interferred with. The upper center chip you are thinking of cutting out does simply power the cathode and can be cut out.

Additionally, be a careful of the small chip and components directly under that yellow line-they control syncronization.

I'd suggest not using power tools because of the possibility of static discharge frying the board.

i don't know about other dremels, but when mine's pluged in the bit zaps when you touch it
