For the past two weeks I've been working on a client's machine.
It's a currency counter, a very basic one. You put the money in the top, it runs through the machine and counts all the bills.
When I originally started working on the machine, all it needed was a good cleaning. But, as I was putting it back together again after cleaning it out, it stopped working.
I check the fuse and a few other things, and can find nothing obviously wrong with the machine (other than it won't power on.) So after a while I decide my best bet is to take it back to the shop to work on it.
I test it and find that no power is getting from the power supply to anywhere else. This makes me very unhappy as the power supply is a pain to replace in these things. But I spend my free time at work for a couple days taking it all the way apart to get the power supply out. I test the new power supply out on the machine by connecting the power connector to the machine and turning it on. It works great, so I install it in the actual machine.
After installing the power supply in the machine, but before putting everything else back together I decide to test it again. It won't turn on again! So I spend time replacing a part here or there, checking to see if this fixes the issue, but nothing works.
That brings me up to this morning, I sitting there once again, measuring various spots on the machine for resistance, when an idea strikes me. You see, I realized that it wasn't that power wasn't getting from the power supply to anything else, it was that power wasn't getting to the power supply. I never checked to see if the power switch itself was actually working. So I test it, and sure enough, the switch is dead... So I spent two weeks working on a machine, on and off, taking the entire thing apart, for a stupid, 10 cent power switch that would have taken me all of 30 seconds to replace in the beginning.
The moral of this story is, check to make sure the power switch is actually working before tearing an entire machine apart.
I truely feel stupid today.

Ha ha, that sucks man. But I know how you feel. I thought my N64P had a dead 3V converter and went through a bunch of stuff trying to fix it. It turns out it was the power switch, and all I had to do was remelt the contacts with my iron and it worked. If I had been smart enough to just check the ground connection going to the switch I would have been fine, but being stupid I never thought of it.
the bear goes grr

I have no idea what you could possible be talking about... and I am not aware of any edit feature that this forum may have, and have never utilized such a thing...

Thank you, and have a nice day.

For the sake of posterity.
This thread's original topic was "Bear witness to my stupidity"
F thought it should be "bare" not "bear"
Kurt_ posted a picture of a wet bear
Easily influenced by peer pressure, I changed the topic to "Bare witness to my stupidity"
Triton pointed out that "bear" was actually correct
I changed the topic once again to something completely unrelated
