using a railgun for people would not be too great, to accelerate a human to any decent speed (nowhere near lightspeed) would impart MASSIVE g-forces (no relation lol) to boost a person into orbit around the moon woult kick them off the mass driver (name for a big railgun type thing) would be sonething like 10 Gs and yea i cant spell!

nah, humans can withstand up to i think 15 Gs for a very short period of time without being killed, broken ribs and things like that yea but you would survive, for a long time even 6 or 7 Gs would kill you probably

well......I know that if we wanted to reach the speed of light, it'd probably be like in Planet of the Apes, where they accelerated for a couple years, flew at almost the speed of light for some minutes or something (though in reality it'd be many years to wherever we want to go) and then they'd decelerate for another couple years.

actually in a vacume without gravity there would be no sence of acceleration i think, not 100% sure. so as soon as you get out of earths gravity well you could use something like the orion maneuver to give ya a real kick in the pants. nowhere near the speed of light but pretty damn fast, earth to mars in about 6 months.

Again any idea on how to do this is good, Even at slow acceleration the G-forces would be immense. Thats why I think inertial dampeners will be a very large part of interplanetary space travel. Effectively you would need to cancel a 15 G force with an equal negative g force so that the pilot would effectively be weightless.
The best example of this is from the movie Contact, when Jodie Foster is travelling through the wormhole and she lets go of her compass and then gets out of the chair in the spacecraft. The thing is shaking violently and the chair she is sitting is is shaking like crazy but thats only because it was attached to the ceiling.
The point is that by subjecting the compartment to equal negative Gs the pilot would effectively become weightless.
Edit@Triton : From what I understand the g-force is is caused by acceleration and deceleration. It has too do more with momentum than gravity. If you suddenly accelerate the spaceship would go faster than the pilot and he would feel the Gs. Same with the deceleration.

G force is short for gravitational forces, in space away from stars and planets there is no gravity so there pretty much is no such thing as Gforces, no gravity= no gravitational force. so outside of the gravitational pull of earth you could figure out some way of accelerating yourself to very high speeds VERY quickly with no ill effects, i mean the space shuttle is going 16,000 miles per hour around the earth when in orbit pulling 0 Gs lol
