Sadly they arn't, I mean thats why they call them LAPtops because they sit on your lap, unlike PALMpilots that fit in your hand, this is like the best of both worlds. The portability of a Palm with the a fully functional keyboard.

I got it off ebay, you might find them in stores but they run about $200 at walk-in places.
If I got it at a yardsale, then they would probably want a good $500 for it - it was a grand when it came out. You can only get them used, of course.

When discussing the portability of laptops and such, I believe the term 'handheld' would be more appropriate for things such as this and palmpilots and criznap.

I'd recommend looking into the Toshibra Libretto laptops (the old ones with Pentiums and Pentium MMX's's's, not the new ones), but I'm not going to, because I hate them with a vengence! I reinstalled Windows 98, Windows ME, and mouse drivers countless times trying to get the darned mouse to work!!!!1

It never did...I ended up taring the thing apart, and it's prolly now broken.

Anyway, the Libretto (I had a Libretto 70) has a 640x480 6 inch screen with rather good refresh rates, a max of 32MB ram (depending on model, some go up to 64), yadda yadda, no drives, yadda yadda, laptop hard drive, yadda, and all about the size of a VHS tape.

I had some kind of compaq like this jornada a really long time ago, but it was black and white and had only 2 mb of ram. It broke really fast (it was like 10 bucks at a yard sale in about 1999). Frankly I would much rather have a palm os device, because it is the second best os after Mac OS 10.4.

Yes g-force, you can buy Wi-Fi cards for them. I just bought a PCMCIA wireless card for it off ebay (they have to have WinCE drivers though.)

What of its internet surfing abilities? The PSP runs out of "memory" relatively quickly, making such things as 'google image search' unfeasible. How capable is this little device of yours?

Also, what kind of program are you creating on it, or do you just tinker indeffinitely? How is the typing aspect? Does it make a particularly good word processor? Doom clearly runs, but can you play it easily with the keyboard?

Well, I can't attest to whether or not the cache is large, because I don't have a wireless card yet. But, the Jornada has 32MB ram, and you can allocate almost all of it just for an internet cache. So I don't think that would be a problem.

As far as programming, I am writing little programs in PocketC (it has some basic graphics functions) and mess around with it. But mainly, I use it for playing NetHack. The CE port runs nicely on it.
Touch typing is not hard, you have to give yourself 2 or 3 minutes and you're set. The keys are closer-spaced, obviously.
It has Pocket Word, which contains basically everything you'll use from Word (TrueType fonts, justified text, etc). I even used it to write a short paper and use infrared to beam it to a school laptop where I could print it.
Doom is playable, the port needs some work but is alright. I get about 11fps. Control is no different than the PC version, just use the arrow keys and Ctrl.

Some people brag about the PSP being an all-purpose machine... I personally think this beats the crap out of the PSP. I get 8-9 hours battery life, and the battery's 4 years old!
