The Xbox could actually be ran off of 12v... I will post a follow up later on this afternoon. It uses somthing similar to a ATX power supply but at lower watts.

Some people are assuming that the xbox would require a inverter. I posted in the wrong thread but still as DC-DC converter is possible. Battery life would still be an issue but still even with the PSU shaved off the xbox would be around the same size as a xbox-360. And it would still be a large portable console. Additonally, You could also take out the dvd-rom and install a larger harddrive and put games you own on it. . That would require a modchip which is completely legal if you do not use software built with the XDK that is not licensed by microsoft. The battery life would mostly be compairable to a laptop, I think. Finally, I do not have any plans on attempting this [My crystal case it too pretty], but I would offer some help you anyone who would like to attempt it.

You could just use a mini-ITX power supply for it (or does that not output the correct voltages?). As for the other parts, replace the DVD drive with a laptop version (same for the HD), build your own heat pipe to help cool the processor and buy a massively huge stock of li-poly batteries. You'll need the backpack for those, but the Xbox will at least be handheld!
Also, @Sparkfist: the prospect of Microsoft actually permitting that to be made (especially with the patent laws and encryption techniques now) is hilarious.

Why not put the modded XBox into the backpack, then have a screen with an integrated controller attached with a wire. The handeld will be like a Gameboy. You could also mod the XBox so it's in a laptop case, so you could use one of those laptop backpacks. It would still be heavy and the power issue is still there, but you wouldn't look as goofy and you could walk and play (if you don't break your legs trying to carry it around
