I think its either the cathode tube is broke or you broke something when looking at the back of it (either broke or shorted something).
If you did something to the cathode tube then that should stop the circuit that the tube is connected to. As such, try just doing the LED mod, that would take care of that (if its the tube).
If afterwards it still is doing nothing, try looking at capacitors and stuff. If anything blown or broken (possibly when you opened it) the either buy a new capacitor/ fuse/ whatever and put it in (assuming you know how to solder).
I had a TV that I opened up (for no reason, just bored) once and just looked around. It would not work out afterwards, the general devistated feeling ensued as that was MY TV that mama just got me. Anyway, long story short it was a stupid capacitor or something that I knocked one leg off. Just put it back on and it worked. SO it could be the same type of problem.
PS It was an accident I found the knocked out capacitor...

When in Japan with access to just about every system ever made and those that have yet to see international soil, gather your forces, and make the cool ones your own.

You can remove all the crap behind the actual crystals of the LCD and stick a lightbulb behind to see if it still works... I used to use a psone screen to play games with a work bench 100 watt lamp... Got hot, but worked to play... your backlight is burned out... I've gota spare working LCD with working backlight and all if you want it?
