i bought a 160gb hard drive today got a video card from a friend and got a free version of windows xp professional now all i need is a mobo case and power supply. i'm going to a computer show on sunday any tips on a processor or mobo?

At minimum I'd say a 750mH CPU, thoug 1gH+ would be best. As for the mobo, make sure it accepts no less than 512 ram limit. If I were in your situation I'd also keep my eye out for an AMD mobo/cpu combo.

To have any resonable chance at playing the latest-greatest, you will need no less than a 2ghz processor and the best damn video card you can find. If HL2, DooM3, and the like aren't your bag, then the stuff recommended above is fine.

I build computers for friends and such. Go with AMD Athlon 64 as the CPU. Nothing else (unless you want to spend a lot of money for a 64FX). There is a computer I build for way under $800 and it played UT2004 everything MAXED and all addons ON flawlessly! That and it will be able to stay up with the market for a good few years as it is a 64 CPU system and Wind is now 32 with a 64 alpha or beta in the works.
How much are you willing to spend on this thing? And do you already have a CD type drive and a compatable case? Those help to bring down the price a bit.
Just depends on what you want. I personally have a AMD 64 3000+, 1gig (2x 512) of DDR333 RAM, a 100some-odd-gig Harddrive, and a 128bit 128(maybe 256 I forget)mb DDR with dual outputs (automatic TWO MONITORS, I love two monitors).
So LIke I said, it depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much knowledge you have on the whole computer building thing.

I have an AMD64 and it's delicious. I think he's trying to get a computer that's just fast enough to get by, though.

a mobo + xp2600 combo is like $100. I would not get anything under 1500mH personally. I would browse prices online first. The last PC show I went to were asking for less than instore price, but more than online retailer price.

I got an athlon xp 2400+ 2.0 ghz and motherboard combo for $120 on tigerdirect, so look and see if they have a booth, thay are good quality and have good service.

If they have frys electronics where you live I suggest you go there. They had an AMD 64 and a compatible motherboard bundled together for about sub $100(I think $80 but it may be more) about a month ago.

Oh the windows xp pro was completly legal I got it from my friend Jim. His dad does OEM loading for (Company name withheld)

That guest up above a little ways was me... My host families computer hates cookies... a lot. Sorry. But as I said, go with the 64 CPU. Great, buttery 64-bit goodness (like Popeyes biscuits but not 64 bit).

why 64 bit though(i dont want to sound stupid but i have experience with old computers i mean i still have an 8088 board i use)

64-bit processors do twice the work in a cycle, making it about twice as fast, at least once you have an OS that supports it (don't worry, there are plenty of Linux versions to play with)
