is it possible to make a portable atari out of a six switch? i only have one and i cant get a four switch atari from any where around here. ataris go for around $100 in these parts

you are going to need a different video mod found on the how to sticky
The board if i remember right is already cut down inside the system you will have to follow the traces off of the traces on the board to find out what is nessisary and what matches up with the setup on the regular 4 swich moddles, I wish i could be more help but i fried my 6-switch

The board layout on the 4-switch is not at all like the 6-switch, and the 4-switch was made with a design that couldn't be better for a portable. 2/3 of the 4-switch can be cut down, until it's a 4x4" square. On the other hand, the 6 switch does not have this design, and has to be its original ~6x10" board

And to continue that thought, that doesn't mean you can't make a portable out of it. Heck, you can make a Portable xbox...but it'll be huge, and so will the 6-switch.

From examining the inside of a six switch (I have various Ataris in bits around my desk here!) in my opinion, I think making a portable would be EASIER from a six switcher.

If you take the PCB that is contained within the somewhat substantial-looking sheilding, that's 90% of the Atari. The rest is the board that contains the switches, RF etc and the smaller board that has the joystick sockets and power connector. Leaving the main board as-is and condensing the other PCBs onto a smaller board sounds a lot easier than redesigning the main board to accomodate everything.

Just my humble opinion.

You don't need to redesign anything, Ben has plans up so that you only have to cut a portion out of the 4-switch, then wire a few jumpers.
