Can I power my psone screen this way ?
Hi guys,
I'm contemplating a basic n64 project. I've got a couple of delusions that I need to clarify.
1) I'm under the delusion that instead of worrying about the whole 3.3/12v issue I could leave the part of the wall adapter that handles that intact(I know this will make for a huge portable) &
2) that I can somehow hook up what used to be the plug end of the wall adapter to my 7.2v RC battery to run this portable? Am I crazy?

the wall adapter takes 120v AC and turns it into DC. if you give it 7.2V DC, nothing will happen. the transformer inside relies on the nature of AC power to operate, DC power wont pass through a transformer.
the easiest way to do things is probably just to hook the battery right up to the 12v and use a reg for the 3.3v line. you might be able to use some of the insides of the power supply for the 3.3v regulation, but i dont think anyone has ever tried it before.

Nope, I'm not trying to invent the wheel here. I'm just looking for the easiest way to power this thing. Can someone point me in the direction of what I need to get in order to get the power down to 3.3v, then? Thanks (Or if someone who has done this has some instructions that would be a bonus).

there are many commercially avaliale regulators to look into. the only ones i have experience with are the dc-dc converters that TI offers. there is a nice juicy 7 page thread on these forums near the top.
there are also linear regulators that you can use, but someone else is goign to have to help you with those. there is also a recent thread about them though.

I know it's kind of goofy, but I think the N64 is my favorite system and I don't want to bite off more than I can chew with soldering. I'll have to draw up a diagram to show you guys what I have in mind.
But anyways here is my question. Can I also power my psone screen from the 12v line? If if so do I just have to run it through a 7805 & then into the psone screen? Also if this is doable, where is a good(easy) spot for me to pick up the 12v? Thanks so much.

im pretty sure you can, although im not the authority on regs around here. heat might be and issue; the higher the voltage difference between the input and the output, the hotter the thing gets. a small heatsink might be a good idea.
the nintendo 64 has a +12 volt line inside of it. if you take the motherboard out, you can get it from the bottom side of the board right where the power supply plugs in. it should be clearly labelled. the solder points are huge, and youd have to be pretty incompetent to mess up your system while attempting this.

psone screens have some components that don't use one of the 7805s so it shouldn't go higher than 9v. you should get a regulator to get around 8v for the screen. you could also get one of these adjustable 2 amp car adapters that can output 1.5v, 3v, 4.5v, 6v, 7.5v, 9v, and 12v. if you get one of those you could power the screen from 12v or the 3.3v line from a battery so that's what you want if you might end up making it a cordless portable or a corded semi-portable. BTW, that's the car adapter i got and it works great

Any chance I could get some more information on how I could:
use the adjustable 2 amp car adapter to power the screen from 12v or the 3.3v line from a battery so that's what you want if you might end up making it a cordless portable? Right now I'm choosing to go with a corded semi-portable, only because I think that is what I can get done.

you're using the N64 PSU to get 12v, right? here's the pinout for the adapter:

to power the screen from 12v, connect the input to pin 7 of the N64 power switch, connect the output to the power pin on the PSone screen, connect the grounds, and turn the switch to 7.5v.
to get 3.2v (it seems to ouptut 3.2v instead of 3v) for the N64 from a battery, connect the input to the + on a 7.2v-9v battery, connect the output to pins 2 or 3 on the power plug, connect the grounds, and make sure the switch is on 3v.
you can only do one of those options at a time since it only outputs one voltage at a time. i forgot to mention that if you are using the N64 power supply, you'll need this for the screen instead of a 7808 (if you don't do the LED mod) because this is more efficient than a 7808 and the N64 PSU only supplies 800 mah for the 12v line.

Corded semi-portable question.
I'm slowly working on a multistep corded semi-portable design.
So far I've been able to simply desolder & extend the power adapter plug & A/V cord plug. I was able to test this & the n64 seemed to be working fine. Next I went & de-soldered the N64 controller port 1 /2 & tried to extend it. At 1st I thought I must have fried my motherboard, but then I noticed that my power adapter no longer seemed to be working. Any ideas on what I did? Thanks guys.

Help, I destroyed my on/off switch.
