i dont understand the album covers that appear in the "now playing" screen of ipods. for some reason some songs automatically have the pictures asigned to them without me having to do anything, but then the majority i have to do myself.
and its a complete arse to do manually.
is there no way to have this done automatically, somehow itunes is sort of making a half arsed attempt but fails most of the time.
could anyone shed some light?

Downloaded music usualy has some hidden album art files, that programs like Windows Media Player, and in your case an Ipod, read and then display.
Windows Media Player is usualy the culprit for assigning the album art in the first place, as it automatically downloads album art for your current song.
A more controlled way to do it is with this little doo-dad:
