joysticks and pots

the other day i came across a joystick component from an old third party gamecube controller. then it hit me. i thought it would be kinda neat to use it to control the throttle and steering on my rc car. so i took apart the existing transmitter and find that it uses pots to control throttle and steering. then i figured since the joystick and transmitter both use pots they should be easy to switch out. well after many failed attempts i am at a dead end and am wondering is even possible to do? do the pots in the trasmitter have to be a certain value? if so, is there any way to bypass it?
