N64 controller
Word of the wise. If you open an official nintendo64 controller, do not open the analog stick contraption. Its so poorly designed. The whole thing is backed up by one big spring, and if you open it, its pops out, and I had to figure out how to rebuild the thing. Plus it was coated in scraped away plastic and dirt and junk. Then after cleaning, the analog stick is still shot

yeah, the n64's analog stick is the worst designed one I've ever seen. Also, it's overly complex.
Instead of using 2 potentiometers like every other joystick, they used 2 leds and 2 photoresistors. There's a pretty good guide on how it works at http://howthingswork.com

I know. I bought one at goodwill with a "floppo" joystick, thinking i could fix it. I took out the little screw, opened it and the little spring flew out and hit my brother in the face. *laughs at funny memory*

hmmm I think I get what you're saying, and the answer is yes. cut off the d-pad part, solder wires to every button somehow ( up, down, left, right) on the d-pad, and then solder those wires back to their approppriate places on the controller board. pretty simple, actually.
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Thats right! the mechanical failure was the stick itself!someone wrote:the advantage of the LED system was that there are no touching parts, and less chance of machanical falilur.

Visit us at Portablesofdoom.org
Well on the off chance you open it or the thumb stick is so worn that its almost useless, ebay has people that are selling just the thumb stick, and its only about $3.
