Cheap DDR clone TV Game is a NOAC

Post by scherzo »

Well, I went gift shopping yesterday, and since I'm kind broke I hit Walgreens of all places first. I came across this DDR style game that hooks directly to your TV. The whole game is inside the dance pad.

I have a cousin who's about 13 and she loved playing Pump It Up on my XBOX a few months ago. So I tried my luck and bought the cheapo DDR clone. I'm sure as hell not buying her an XBOX with Pump It Up!

The thing was just $20. I gave it to her last night and we hooked it up on her TV. The first thing I noticed is that the graphics were sub-par for something today. The pad was pretty responsive but very unfair with the scoring sometimes.

It has 50 "Songs" in it. Two of them are actually games. The first one we tried was a Whack-The-Mole style game. With this game it was actually better to hit the pad with your hand than use your feet. Kind of fun actually.

The other game was... Nintendo Pinball for NES. I already had a hunch that the thing was a NOAC but that verified it. Pirated illegal stuff being sold in my local Walgreens.

Of course, there isn't a cart slot. But what I do wonder if it's the glob top or an actual IC. If it's the later, maybe it would be a good source of NOACs.

What this thing gets me thinking about is that there are still NES coders out there making stuff. Someone had to make those DDR games in there with 6502 assembler. Amazing. The NES still lives on. Wow.

I'm afraid you're in my and Bioniclebert's boat if it has no cartridge slot. The games are on a flash chip glop-top... so unless you have a flash chip writer then you're out of luck.

It's probably not illegal, as long as they don't directly copy Nintendo's code then the NOAC programmers can do whatever they want. (The NES hardware patent(s) are partially expired.)

I saw those and was thinking of buying one, but I couldn't find a list of music or demo so I decided against it :P
