What videogame movies SHOULD they make?
I dunno if I've done a poll on this before but with talk of Halo being done and Doom actually making progress (after nearly 10 years in Development Hell) I thought maybe to bring it up.
Let's keep it in the realm of realism and make the idea that the movie is supposed to make as much money as possible (which is the goal of Hollywood) Here are some factors to consider when deciding:
1) People who know NOTHING of the game should still want to see it.
2) It has to be made for a feasible amount of money. (Like 50-75 mil)
3) It has to be PG-13 (So no Grand Theft Auto)
4) Everyone who loves the game will want to see it.
So, which game could do it?

I remember on classicgaming.com/vcsp you made up the idea for a Castlevania SOTN one. I think it would be great and sell lots. Two reasons, a lot of people like vampire movies (look at Underworld) and the second is who in the world has never played or seen a Castlevania game.
Alucard is the best vampire hands down!

My personal vote (as I respond to my own post) is for MEDAL OF HONOR.
1) People that like war and action movies would see it.
2) It could contain actual historical crap
3) It could be a fun "bubble-gum" spy/espionage WW2 movie like Indiana Jones and not heavy-handed like most modern WW2 films.
4) It has a built-in kick-butt musical score.
5) You could have a love interest using the Manon chick from the earlier games
6) MACHINE GUNS! Do the violence Indy-esque, IE, people get shot but you don't see blood flying everywhere.
7) Insert "inside jokes" such as "seeing French schoolgirls shoot better"
A well-made MOH movie could do $200 mil domestic, EASY. (And I'd love to direct it)

Metroid. Definatly.
It shouldn't be samus running around all by herself killing baddies though, that would be a very unentertaining. It should be a mercenary story, in the future. They should probably bring in Armstrong Huston just so they can kill him, you know, for the fans. Other than that and a few injokes ("You know Ms. Aran, the doors will open for you here even if you don't have to shoot them.") it should have virtually nothing in common with the games.

Warrenties were meant to be voided

Well, I'd love a Castlevania movie as well but I think Van Helsing toperdoed that idea for a while.
See, it basically WAS that kind of movie but (in my opinion and many others) not very good. It also cost nearly $200 mil, probably had an ad budget near $100 mil, and made about $130 US. Keep in mind wth US box office grosses the studio only gets about HALF (the theatre gets the other half) so barring overseas and video Van Helsing is about $230 mil in the hole. When all's said and done it might break EVEN, but that doesn't buy new swimming pools for movie execs.
Of course it took SEVERAL mega-flop pirate movies before one was a hit (The Johnny Depp mascara one). Maybe after a year or two.
In my opinion the key to a successful vampire movie is 1) mood 2)action 3)blood 4)sensuality. I felt Van Helsing had nice sets but no mood, confusing and dumb action, virtually NO blood and was about as sexy as Sesame Street
Granted it shouldn't be a blood-soak porno or anything, but look one of the most successful vamp movies: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) It was rated R but did pretty well and was critically well recieved. It also stuck VERY close to original book (just with more boobs)
Martin Landau in Ed Wood: "The blood... the blood is horror. Women in their collect unconcious have the pain of childbirth. If you want to make it with a lady.... take her to see Dracula"
Or Castlevania.

I cant argue that Hollywood thinks they know what people want, they've proven they dont when comics or videogames are ported.
For the Castlevaina one, it would have to be either of the two with Alucard, now I'm not just saying that because he's the badest, its you need a charater that has internal confilce. Having SOTN would be better but still the geniues writters probibly have something competely stupid and irrelevet in the story (ie, flash back to when he was young, the only one he had was in a dream).
Maybe the only way a good videogame based movie could come out is if the fan base were to write it.

hey thats a good idea, port video games to theaters! imagine about 100 people playing asteroids at the same time! wow that would make a vary cool mmo game.
any way i think they could pull of donkey kong... just imagine the end where the big ape is tossing barrels at mario from gurders of a old broken sky scrapper. (the big ape being donky kong). yeah that would be nice.

I agree with the above posts. I think you could basically take the story of SOTN and make it into a movie, flesh out a romance between Alucard and Maria, conflict with his dead mom, lord of evil father, boom! It's got everything you need.
See, I think some directors think "I'm ABOVE a videogame movie" and therefore throw out all the original ideas and try to make it "their own" What's wrong with the original idea?
And definitely keep the music! It's great to throw a bone to the fans. Like in Lord of the Rings where every so often a line of dialog was actually the name of a chapter. It still fits in the story, but is a treat for fans. Same with the Castlevania music - it's such an integral (and remembered) part of the series you HAVE to use it!
Although if I had my choice of something to make (Which would be AWESOME), I think I'd still go with Medal of Honor. It too has an awesome score and if done right would easily do more $ than Castlevania.
