I have an issue where the controller I got with the PSone appears to be a different version than covered.

In the book, there are 9 pin connections show on the controller connector, but on the controller I have, there are 8 connections (the silk screen shows the 1...8)
I know that traditionally on the 9 pin pinouts, that one pin carries a voltage, and another one is not connected to anything. Seems that in this version, the non connected pin has been removed from the PCB (and the pin is also missing from the controller connector.

So my question is:
So i wire it up like the book says, but ignore the connect the #2 to # 8?
Is there anything else I should be aware of....
The controller mofdel is scph-110

yeah in the book ben tells you you need the controllor that is whiter and says psone on it, not the gray one that says playstation

Yah, I know about that, but that was the controller that came with the PSone that I got off ebay. He does mention the pinouts can change and whatnot...But the main question is has anybody managed to deal with one of there controllers. Because again, this controller should be just as functional, the only diff being that the pin that is non-connected pin has been physically excluded from the PCB

If it wasn't for the line in the book that actually has you connect pin 8 to spot 2(pin 8 is the one that is missing I imagine since the pin was never used anyway, so now pin 8 is prolly what pin 9 would be in the actual controller)...then I wouldn't care. But this must have a function. So then the more specific question is, can I simply skip this step and be ok, or will I be FUBAR'd because I can't make that connection...pin 2 does exist, and according to a schematic, it carries a charge of some sort

Well, I've looked all over the forums, and I see people asking the same question, but nobody has an answer. I think I have it figured out.

Instead of having a plastic connector with pins 1-16 I have a ribbon cable with the same count coming off the underside of the controller.... Of course these are all the buttons...but are they the same pinout? In a word, no.

The pinout is actually dramatically different. For example the common ground on this controller appears the be pin 16 while in ben's book, the specified pin is 7 on the controller. Have tested a few buttons, and they all appear to be different pinouts. I'm not an elec. engineer type, so I'm not sure how to describe the actual button areas. They are dark grey spots where each button would press and each button is split in half where it appears each half has its own trace.

With my multimeter, I can lay one post accross both halves of the button and then I use the other post to test the 16 pins one by one, thus identifying each button and correlating pin. This will allow me to build a map which I can then adapt to ben's book. So I will connect pin 16 from my controller to the books spot 7 on the button board I made from the book.

As far as the actual controller goes, I have only 8 pins instead of 9. No prob. I have put the controller port back on the mobo and I've plugged in the controller. Now I can put one post of my multimeter on the pin with a certain color on the controller itself, and see where it connects on the mobo side (which BTW, the mobo does have the same layout as the book) Thus I will end up connecting the correct pins to the correct parts, and thus not having to worry about the pin 2 to pin 8 conundrum.

Of course all this is a lot more work that just finding the stupid controller, but I'm starting to think its not so easy. The controller I have does say PSOne on it, and it appears to be the white one, not the gray one. I've looked at a local EB and they had several of the same that I had (Model SCPH-110) all had a missing pin which would be the unused pin.

Sorry for the long post, but I finally think I have it figured, and I had not seen the answer elsewhere...hope this helps others. I will post back with my results, as I am attempting to have this portable ready as a christmas present for my nephew in law who has Leukemia

Have you drawn up a pinout for the controller yet? I could really use one, because I have the same model controller...

I will hopefully be getting that done today... I'll post a text file or something later once I figure it out. Of course, life seems to be intruding on my project, so it may take longer. I'll keep you posted
