Theory/question about N64 power

Post by XPCportables »

Ok I really don't know how the power brick for an n64 works, so this may or may not work. My question is does the power brick convert AC to DC then regulate it, because if that's how it works then my theory would work. my theory is that you could wire your battey to the innards of the n64 power brick right after it's converted to DC but before it is regulated so that you didn't have to regulate it yourself. will this work?

Well, you could be right, but since it comes from straight AC, I'd guess there would be transformer in there for each voltage.

I thought of doing something similar to use a regular PC power supply off 12v, but it was an incredible mess (rewinding transformers etc)

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think it's possible.

There's only one transformer in it and a fair amount of circuitry. I haven't bothered to go through and find out what everything does in it yet, but I don't think you would want to try and use the regulators from it anyways. The whole thing is very bulky (it takes up the entire inside of it's case) and I'd imagine it gets fairly warm.

Ive already thought about how warm it would get and it's not very hot so thats not a problem, but it is true that the thing is bulky. Ill try to see if I can figure anything out about it once I get the thing open.
