New source for cheap 5" LCD screens found! (Best Buy)

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

New source for cheap 5" LCD screens found! (Best Buy)

Post by roto »

I was cruising the local Best Buy when something caught my eye... a $39.95 GameCube LCD screen! I thought to myself "Hmm, PSone screens are imposible to find, maybe I'll see if this is similar?".

So I grabbed one and took it home only to be disappointed when I found out it only comes with a CAR adaptor (no AC adaptor like PSone). But the good news: it has an AV-in jack, it's pretty small and if you're planning on building a portable SNES heres the best news of all: STANDARD NINTENDO VIDEO JACK! Yep, thanks to nintendo being cheap (or frugal?) the GameCube's (and N64's and SNES's) video jacks accept this screen's plug.
Oh and since it came with NO AC adapter I first looked around my house for something that can provide 12V and 3.25A and of course found nothing, same thing online, Radio Shack had one 12V 1.5A adapter but then I'd have to cut and splice to ghetto-rig something up (not fun)....but then it HIT ME WHY NOT USE THE GAMECUBE POWER SUPPLY? So I bought one at GameStop for $14.99. So total for the screen and power supply is around $55. Still pretty reasonable.

Ok enough talk, some pix:

1 - Right after I got it, used my trusty Radica to test the screen (in my car beacuse it only came with a CAR ADAPTER!)
Image

2 - After I got the GC power brick ($14.99 at GameStop, cheaper elsewhere).
Image

3 - Some internal shots, very small space for power and stuff so most of the screen's "stand" can be cut off.

My local best buy had about 30 of these on the shelf and who knows how many in the back. The website doesn't have them otherwise i'd post a link. Oh and there's also an XBOX version of the screen for sale but I skipped that one because of it's ugly design (and good thing I did, because of the generic A/V connector from Nintendo!).

Specs: Uhm, needs 12V and 3.25A... I attempted to power it off a battery brick that only gave 10V (yeah I know it needs 12V) but that didn't work out too great obviously.

So thats all, just another source for LCD screens for those in need.

I got a verge 5" one for PS2, looks almost the same, but mine came with an AC adapter. $40 from ebay, including shipping.

Anyways, if it's the same (Which it is probably very close to being), it says at the power in jack '7.5v'. However, I remembe rsomewhere on it said it needed 12.

AFAIK those screens use a 12V input and have a 7808 inside them....
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

looks like a dc-dc convertor-even better. and i doubt it takes 3.25 amps, it's a psone screen in disguise: it probably take around .75 amps

Yeah the screen doesn't need 3.25A because the GC PSU only provides 2.75A and it works... I COULD try that 12v 1/1.5A PSU from RadShack but I dont feel like buying any more junk.

But I tried running it on 10V and it showed a wavy screen for 5 seconds then went black... so take that how you want. Im not sure what to make of it because I'm just a hobbyist and not an electronics tech.

Well Im not shure how well the 7808 would function at 10V its kinda close. (how much higher do you need it anyway?)

And yeah I doubt the power draw is anything over 1.5A thats waay too power hungry for any batteries.Meant to say its too much with a console attaches also. (except if you've got some good batteries, or at least a good reason to use the massive current draws-GCP's I'm hinting to you.)

Well the screen has a by-pass to power both the GameCube and the screen at the same time, so maybe thats why it "requires" 3.25A when in reality it doesn't need nearly as much. I might whip out the old DMM and see how much current the screen is actually sucking up if I don't feel too lazy later tonight.

Right now i'm just trying to figure out a use for this thing cause I have no plans to build anything "portable"...might just stick it into my PC case and power it from the 12V on my PSU :)

Oh and my camera is an old 5MP Oympus C-5000Zoom, great camera. I resized the pix too much because I don't have bandwidth to waste.

Damn right!
I have the PS2 version of that thing, it's exactly the same (probably) except for the A/V jack (for PS instead of GC)

I took it apart yesterday, and (according to tim) it IS a PS1 screen, just in a different case.

--------

I'm not wanting to get off topic, just ask a general question:
My screen has 2 headphone jacks. Should I get rid of one or keep both?

I, being a PC Case modder, would find one of these to be very useful. :)

Gee, I read your mind... or did you read mine?
