PCp feasibility example

I believe that this eBay auction sheds some light on how a person might go about making a PC-portable. Granted, the featured CPU board isn't the fastest type available, but it would be perfectly sufficient for classic PC games.

Notice how everything is integrated and flat against the motherboard, including Ram and HDD-type storage. Furthermore, Windows98 has only taken up about 141MB, leaving 300+ for applications and games.

i noticed it uses compact flash as a hard drive kind of odd it wont hold very much

For the purposes of a PCp, most large hard drives consume to much power to be feasible. The board offers an IDE connector for hard drives, but CF cards make more sense in this situation.

A nice 2 gig card could solve that anyways...logistically speaking...

couldnt you just get like a 20 gig laptop hard drive? or an ipod hard drive?

they make 8 gig (possibly 16gb) cf cards too. (for those with an unlimited budget...)

off course you can! i got plenty of good games on my laptop's 180mb HD. as long as your OK with the older stuff (i love it) then it's more than enough!

I have 49 NES roms only taking up 12MB

and the emulater is 813KB

wow, i want that! if it were cheaper anyway, would make a kick ass carputer! or PCp actually im thinking about after i have some money saved up aftwer i get a job building a carputer for my oldsmobile! i think i wil use the VIA EPIA 800 mobo and a laptop HDD or CF card as a HDD only problem is 8" touchscreens cost more than 2x the price of the mobo, so im gonna mebe get an 8" lcd from gamestop (10% discount if i get a job there) for 99$ new the epia 800 has tv out so its all good! i will make a custom mouse controller thing out of a laptop nub and a wireless mouse i think, i hope i get hired soon!

i think my n64 takes up about 300mb i have tons of roms though they are all leagal considering i have all the origial cartriges.

Or you could buy a "broken" Rio Carbon off of eBay, open it up and take out the microdrive. Apparently, the drive is the same size as a CF card, I saw a guide where a person took his Carbon apart and used the drive in his digital camera with no problems at all. So if we wanted to we could get 6 GB of memory for that PCp.

If a game you want to play is to large for a CF drive, then it's prolly to new to play on most PCp boards anyway. Some games that might be interesting to try would be:

Quake I, II, 3A
Unreal Tournament
Command and Conquer: Red Alert I, II, Tiberium Sun
Master of Orion
SimCity Classic, 2000, 3000, 3000 Unlimited
Conquest: Frontier Wars
Star Trek: Elite Force
Civilization I, II, CTP, CTP2
Sid Meier's Alphe Centuari
Diablo I, II

If I had more time, I'd list all bazillion games capable of fitting on a CF card

Note that all of these wouldn't necessarily run on the motherboard I initially posted, but easily on any of the wide range of tiny motherboards available.

Or you could buy a "broken" Rio Carbon off of eBay

Alternatively, Ipod-rated Microdrives can be had for cheap, because they don't work in digital cameras and etc.
