Inkjet printing process creates 14-in. OLEDs
Technology promises to eventually enable low-cost volume flat-display manufacturing
Strengthening the viability of printing technology in the creation of flat-screen polymer OLED (P-OLED) displays, display technology developer Cambridge Display Technology (Cambridge, U.K.) has created several 14-in. prototype color displays using a multinozzle inkjet process. Made from over 30 million ink jet drops, the displays have a resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels and demonstrate upward scalability from 5.5-in. active-matrix displays created earlier this year.
Importantly, the technology uses up to 128 nozzles to deposit the ink into the pixels in one pass, simulating future commercial production where throughput will be important. The displays were created on an amorphous silicon backplane to demonstrate that the process can use that lower-cost and more widely available alternative to low-temperature polysilicon.
