Super Joy III (NOAC) arcade cabinet question

Post by samseed101 »

Hello, I am new to the forum and I have a question. I apologize if it has been asked / answered elsewhere, but I tried a "search" using several different terms and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I can't even find someone that has done this anywhere on the web. :(

Basically, I have a Super Joy III that I picked up at the mall not too long ago for a decent price. As you know, it can simply be plugged into a television and you will instantly have access to about 5 good games and 71 crappy ones. What I want to do is take the Super Joy and somehow build it into an arcade cabinet. All I would have to do is place a television / monitor in for the screen, connect it to the NOAC, then rewire the controller so that a standard arcade controller could be used instead...and there is where I run into problems.

I am not sure if this can be done. It seeme like it would be fairly simply, but I can't find any information on it anywhere. All I really need to do is find the proper wires or pins for the current controller and splice them into a controller for an arcade cabinet (or any arcade-style controller that would look decent in a cabinet.)

Does this sound as easy as I think it should be? Is there anyone out there that has either done this themselves or someone that can at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for the help.

should be fairly easy really. When you take apart your super joy 3 you'll notice on the controller portion there is a nice little glop top (black blob) just follow the traces coming from the glop top to the different buttons on the controller, then wire up your arcade controls to the glop top apropriately (ie. up to up, down to down, left to left, etc.)

Excellent :) I was hoping it was something fairly simple. I didn't rip the controller apart yet because I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be too complex.

Extremely easy. I made an arcade out of a Jakks Pacific Namco. I presume that the Super Joy would be the same thing. Good luck!

EDIT: Exteremly easy actually. Just take the controller and scratch the top off the pressure pads and solder wires to each copper side of each pad.

Kind of stupid to use a cab just for a plug-n-play. Get a cheap PC and use *gray area* to play everything, I mean, you've already crossed the line with the pirated NOAC games, why not go the extra mile.

Super joy would suck for an arcade cabinet. The video is not all that hot. It's almsot the equivalent of crappy RF, depending on what version you get I suppose. It looks fine on a 2.3" screen, but being so close to a big screen, you could really see the flaws.

BTW, there is a sticky in the NES forums that has a pinout for the Super Joy 3, if that helps any.

All true. You may just want to use a computer.

The Jakks Pacific? Well I have it hooked up to a 13 inch screen and it looks great. I recommend it.

I thought about using one of my spare PCs, but I wasn't exactly sure how to get it to run something without having to mess with the keyboard or mouse everytime I started it up. I was thinking of creating a batch file that would execute automatically upon startup, but then I wasn't sure if I could fine a way to launch and select games... Although a trackball may do the trick there.

But then after I figured that out, I would have to find a way to create the custom cabinet that could hold everything.

It's not too hard. probably the easiest way is to pick a frontend that will run any emulators that you want to run. Have it start on startup (stick it in your startup folder or something, I guess this would depend on the OS used.) Then you should be able to pick and choose games from there pretty easily. Depending on how you make your controls and what frontend you use, you might even be able to use your joysticks and buttons to select the game you want to play.

Right now I use a frontend called Emuloader. I just use it for MAME, but I think it can be used with other emulators as well.
