Portable SNES ROM player?

Post by Kitsune_Baka »

Maybe I'm an idiot, but those Super Nintendo cartridges are super bulky. Ever thought of making a portable that will play roms loaded off of a shrunk down memory cart? (I've been waiting for the day when I'd be able to take my fan-translated japanese games with me on long Greyhound rides but I heard the GPX2 was crap) Or perhaps maybe an SNESp that's differently designed which has the cart going in paralell to the back of the unit, y'know... like the old Gameboys? Oh and when I saw the NES micro on some random website, I thought it was something Nintendo was actually SELLING. So whatever you're doing, please keep it up. Oh, and include more screenshots of your units in action! I want to see the stuff on the screen. ^_^

Well, you can build a SNESp with a relocated cart slot, but...you have to relocate it first. The SNES is one of the easier systems for beginners other than the NES or Super Joy 3.

Where did you hear that the gp2x is crap?

I'm not sure if the snes carts vary as much like nes ones (mappers and such), but if they don't it'd be somewhat easy (for an experienced asm programmer) to build a rom decoder that interprets rom headers and then splits the file accordingly into a few flash chips.

its sweet from everything ive heard.. other than the lack of a backlight, and uses AAs but that not a big deal really.. considering the playtime you get of one is supposedly pretty good and resolution of the screen, I cant wait to get one

Wait, no backlight? Wha....?!! You sure about that? I would think they would have learned not do that from the GBA.

And AA's are great. They can be replaced much easier than Li-Ion's (and li-ions go dead after 500 charges I believe). And it allows it to be sold much cheaper.

I may buy one once they get some good software for it. Until then I have my NESp with Tetris to keep me happy (and sometimes annoyed, those dang blocks are evil!!!)

Ahem, never mind me, I like to blather. Back on topic if you want.

I think he is confused with the GP32.
EDIT: When reffering to having no backlight. There is a non-backlight model of the GP32.

Um... The gp32 was pretty good. And there was a backlight model of it.

I heard, and went along with the 'no backlight' rumor for a long time. I actually heard it early on before gp2x (or their complete specs) came out, in a "gpx2" forum, where it was generally accepted as true. That was their reasoning for how it could get so much better battery life than PSP from standard AA cells.

lately the misinformation continues. SDIO wifi, I've heard it both ways, but tend to think it's possible to get it working. I also can't even find one single *COMPLETE* listing of what's wrong with which models. not to mention what/who the recall covers.

and there are a million "experts" on gp2x flashing nowadays. "experts" just because they happened to get it working, so they've sucessfully completed *1* flash cycle. Hey, let's flash it with these mysterious unofficial fixes. DS & PSP hackers learned about the dangers of that pretty quickly...

so far, the 'GP2x is garbage' has the following seemingly legit arguements:
1)'pressure on the screen' problem for which (I think) certain model numbers have been recalled.
2)The overly bright/uneven brightness issues (firmware fix of some kind).
3)Stereo/mono issues (software workaround).
4)scanline/flickering screen problems (appearantly caused by the fix for the uneven brightness issues).

This is what I have pieced together because there is no good info source aside from 1,000,000 different posts on forums. I'm sure I have at least half of these wrong, please let me know which. At least there aren't serious, crippling controller issues like the zodiac had.

Sorry, my roomate said that the GPX2 was basically an expensive toy that didn't work that had flawed firmware or something or other. He's really biased or something, I had heard you could make PSP's play snes roms too, but you had to have the generation one model because they fixed all the exploits in the later models. I had also read that you could get a GBA to play SNES roms, but you'd only be able to see a quarter of the screen. All I want is something I can play Seiken Densetsu 3, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean and other previously untranslated games on but on the go.
