A note on Ben's predictions (Nintendo mostly)
Moderator: Moderators
On the topic of Nintendo settling for a small market share, they're not Apple. In the Videogame indestry things fluxuate and move every year and every console generation. Nintedo's CEO and marketing department would be retards not to want majority share. Profites are profites are profites, you get some and you'll want more. Esspeally since they once had majority rule of the late 8bit era.
The key reason the Revolution didnt apeal to me was it didnt offer any teen or older games. That and the controller. Granted I've played on it and used the controller but compared to the Xbox's S controller or the Dual Analoge Sony it feels and looks odd. And games, I'm not going to shell out $150 at the time to play 2 or 3 games.
The new controller looks like a hark on to the old NES controller days. And I have to agree with Ben, all this hype about it being the greatest thing in the world. I dont believe that I think its far too limited to fill the need for modern FPS and infact majority games. It has a D-pad and 2 buttons for crying out loud!
The reason that people have their sets aimed at the PS3 and Xbox360 for this generation is that they once again stand to handle a great majority of games. Face it Hi-end graphics are what most people look for, and on top of that the largest share of the indestry is in Teens and Young Adults, who have money.
And being a gaming console for the younger crowd isnt bad, its bad business. Your not going to have 8-12 year old walkin to a store and buy a game or the console its self, they have not money. They parents buy and they're not going to shell out cash for every game/accery/add-on that is released.
And that Xbox and PS2 are geared only to the older crowd? No they have some released that are rated E, not as many as say T or M but enough that a PS2 can serve the parents and kids. I know this a friend that lives around the corner from me is set up like that. When he plays a game he plays older games like Leaser Suit Larry, then his kids can play a game aimed at them.
Also if you want to get all "Conspericy" on this the Revolution is going to be under powered, like the Dreamcast and look what happened there.

Still short of having shouder buttions (SNES had them) and the two analoge stickes. Yeah you can drop one in place of the gyroscope thing. I just dont see it having wide spread uses in all game types.

I think the Revolution is going to bring Nintendo back into the console world. The idea of their new controller does simplify things allot. It will make the companies think, okay, now what really needed. No more getting confused with "okay, now what button does what?" The thing that I think will make or break this system is how well having to hook up sensors around the screen will go. What titles are out when released will also be a big factor.
i'd have to agree with ben on the nintendo-wrist thing. if you have to wave it around and point it at stuff, your arm's gonna get tired and you can't rest your hands on something while playing because the gyroscopes will mess you up if you do that. not to mention the lack of buttons will really screw up some games. true, it does technically have 4 buttons, but 2 of them are A and 2 of them are B. one pair of A and B are positioned so you can use them holding itlike a remote and the other pair are positioned so you can use them holding it horizontally (very awkward with the trigger under the D-pad).

so there you have it, 2 buttons. i know it simplifies finding the right button, but hurts games that require more to function right. i think the controller alone is enough to kill revolution

Nintendo actually said that they were not going for the major market share, they just want to turn a profit. They're using what is called the Blue Ocean strategy-finding an open market instead of competing in a crowded one.Sparkfist wrote:On the topic of Nintendo settling for a small market share, they're not Apple. First of all, the game list for Revolution isn't even out. You have no idea what games will be available at launch. Second, you haven't used the Revolution controller. As for your last statement, I'm assuming that you're getting the $150 from your assumed system price. You're also assuming that you'll only like 2 or 3 Revolution games. Don't judge its games too quickly, as many publishers have said that they like the controller.Sparkfist wrote:The key reason the Revolution didnt apeal to me was it didnt offer any teen or older games. The Revolution controller has a "shell" that it can fit into to make it similar to the Gamecube controller. Also, it has a limitless number of potential addons, which Nintendo stated would probably be cheap enough to include with games.Sparkfist wrote:The new controller looks like a hark on to the old NES controller days. The largest portion of the current market is young adults and teens who focus on high end graphics. Nintendo's trying to crack open a whole new market with the Revolution.Sparkfist wrote:The reason that people have their sets aimed at the PS3 and Xbox360 for this generation is that they once again stand to handle a great majority of games. It's bad business? Most people see the Gamecube as a "kiddy" console. Nintendo actually made the most profit out of the three main competitors, because they sold their hardware at a profit and made money off of software. The younger crowd is a great market, and Nintendo's goal is to open up a whole new market. Nintendogs is a good example of this. How many "hardcore" gamers do you think would buy a virtual puppy simulator? Not too many. But Nintendogs sold incredibly well. It slipped into a new market.Sparkfist wrote:And being a gaming console for the younger crowd isnt bad, its bad business. You're right in the fact that Xbox and PS2 do have E games, but Nintendo has far more E games, and their kid-friendly games are generally much higher quality than those of Sony and Microsoft.Sparkfist wrote:And that Xbox and PS2 are geared only to the older crowd? By "conspiracy," I'm going to assume that you mean you're pulling this out of your posterior. The Revolution is likely going to be much less powerful than the Xbox 360 and PS3, but that does not mean it's going to go the way of the Dreamcast. The Xbox 360 is incredibly similar to the Dreamcast (although I don't believe it will fail), as shown on an article on 1UP.Sparkfist wrote:Also if you want to get all "Conspericy" on this the Revolution is going to be under powered, like the Dreamcast and look what happened there.

here are my thoughts on the rev. i think it will do very well! its controller is awesome, just the plain flexability of the design is awesome, i dont know why so many people hate it. it has addons that will probably come packaged with games and stuff like that, and the 3d mouse thing is AWESOME, people whine about your arm and stuff getting tired but i think that will be a non issue. its not like the old arcade guncon things that weigh like 3 lbs and stuff, does your arm get tired using a remote control for your tv? exactly. i for one will get a revolution sometime shortly after they come out, if i have any money

Wanting is one thing, but actually trying to obtain it when they are clearly in no position to do so would be unbelievably stupid. What do you think would happen to Nintendo if they tried to make a console that could compete, hardware-wise, with the PS3 and Xbox 360? Well, seeing as they don't have piles of money to waste like MS, and can't make their own hardware in house like sony, they'd be making one hell of a gamble. And given their image (as 'kiddie'), and the images of their competitors (as 'hardcore'), it would be a very very bad gamble.Sparkfist wrote:On the topic of Nintendo settling for a small market share, they're not Apple. Nintendo is smart enough to realise that they are maximizing their profit potential by not trying to compete in a market where they are significantly outgunned.Profites are profites are profites, you get some and you'll want more. Esspeally since they once had majority rule of the late 8bit era.
(I'm going to assume you mean't gamecube)The key reason the Revolution [did you mean Gamecube?] didnt apeal to me was it didnt offer any teen or older games. That and the controller. Granted I've played on it and used the controller but compared to the Xbox's S controller or the Dual Analoge Sony it feels and looks odd. Really? I would contend that trying to use both analog sticks on a dual analog controller (nessessary for several PS2 games) is significantly more awkward than using the GC controller. Hell, I've heard many people say that the GC controller is by far the best designed controller they've ever used. I'd agree with that statement.
But also comes with an atachable analog stick, bringing the total number of analog axis to 8 (3 axis for position in space, 3 rotational axis, 2 axis on the addon). And it can be plugged into other attachments, and since all the work is done by the Rev controller, those attachments can be cheap enough to include with the game. The new controller looks like a hark on to the old NES controller days. And I have to agree with Ben, all this hype about it being the greatest thing in the world. I dont believe that I think its far too limited to fill the need for modern FPS and infact majority games. But they aren't the only market, as Nintendogs proved. And as I mentioned before, Nintendo does need, and isn't aiming for, the majority of the market. And with the significantly lower price of the Rev (about half of the XBox 360 aparently) it is in a price range that a new market won't be afraid of.The reason that people have their sets aimed at the PS3 and Xbox360 for this generation is that they once again stand to handle a great majority of games. Face it Hi-end graphics are what most people look for, and on top of that the largest share of the indestry is in Teens and Young Adults, who have money.
You're kidding right? And you make it sound like they need to sell a lot of games to be profitable. Nintendo doesn't take a loss on system sales, so there is no need to try and make up for it in software sales. Besides which, kids aren't the only market. Nintendo has already proved that they can get adault women to buy games too.And being a gaming console for the younger crowd isnt bad, its bad business. Your not going to have 8-12 year old walkin to a store and buy a game or the console its self, they have not money. They parents buy and they're not going to shell out cash for every game/accery/add-on that is released.
Too bad that the E games released for those systems generally, well, totally suck. Nintendo makes fantastic games, some of the greatest of all time, and they happen to also be kid-friendly.And that Xbox and PS2 are geared only to the older crowd? No they have some released that are rated E, not as many as say T or M but enough that a PS2 can serve the parents and kids.
Underpowered doesn't mean much. the PS2 was underpowered compared to the xbox and GC, but it still sold. Sega's biggest mistakes with the Dreamcast were getting to the market too early, and releasing the saturn in the US.I know this a friend that lives around the corner from me is set up like that. When he plays a game he plays older games like Leaser Suit Larry, then his kids can play a game aimed at them.

Bah, the revolution controller is the strangest thing ever concieved! It's going against nintendo's OWN PRECEDENTS, so they can do it if they want. As long as I can buy one for the cheapest, I will.
EDIT: About all this talk about nintendo gamecube being a 'kiddie' system. WHO CARES? Video games are just as much for kids as legos are. Video games are supposed to be for kids, and if the ps2 and xbox are not kiddie systems, then who are they made for? They say 'mature gamers', but what do they define as mature? the 30-year-old guy who works at wall-mart and lives with his mom? [/mindless rant]
