Has anyone BUILT an X-Box portable?

You dont need an 8 gig cf card, thats the standard size of the hard drives installed int the Xbox. The Xbox's OS is probibly smaller then 500mb so a 1gig card should do fine.

I know some xbox's use an at connector, but mine is an atx. If the voltages dont match up, I can always solder it down to make it match

I have modded my X-box and also replaced the hard drive with a 250GB one. It runs many emulators.

I have not replaced the DVD yet but will so I can burn from my box to the DVD drive.

The Mobo is about the same size as a laptop so It could be portableized into a laptop sized portable.

With a mod chip you can replace the bios (it is easy) and use any harddrive that you want even a mini-laptop harddrive. Also the info in replacing the DVD in this forum is right. It will not play real discs after that. But so what whan you can ftp the game onto the box or play burnt copys of the disc. Also the hard drive only needs to be locked to play Xbox live. And if it is a portable you wont be doing that.

Also the X-box It is just a 733MHx pentium III with an onboard nvideo graphics card and an onboard creative sound card. All built into the mobo. It seams to use voltages of 5v and 12v

The mobo is very skiny with the exception of the processor heat sink.

I think it would be a great portable but It would be easier just to play the xbox games on your laptop with an emulator and a usb to xbox controller converter and you could use the laptop to run all of your other emulators.

I hear that the nex xbox WILL NOT have a hard drive in order to keep people from moding it. And that it will use onboard memory for storage.

I have a feeling that it will be a very small console like the new PSP2 (or whatever it is called)

I would wait to take a stab at portableizing IT when it comes out.

Power will not be such a problem then.

actually the retail bios will freak if the drive is smaller than 8 gigs cause the partition info is hardcoded in there(thats why no matter how big of an hd you put in there the retail bios will never see more than the first 8 gigs), i said i think cause i dont know if there are any superhacked bioses that support smaller drives but somehow i doubt anyone added support for smaller hard drives.
oh and yeah and as for the "os" thats only a small part of the hard drive. theres 5 partitions, one for the system files (500mb), one for game saves(5gb), and three that act as caches for recently played games(750 each).

i just thought: build it into a laptop shell!!
the xbx can use a laptop HDD (at least mine does for its 2nd one)
figure out the power situation(no more than a cuple of hours if even)
the screen can be modified(in conjunction with a xbx mobo mod)
its just the dvd drive... you can plug in a laptop one if u dont wanna boot xbox games and put a plug in the bak to attatch the original xbox dvd drive (as long as its a modded xbox just use ftp to transfer games and apps)
controller ports in the sides (2 on each)

One day in the summer my friends angus and nikki and I were coming home from angus's Scottish band thingy and Nikki was talking about battery packs that can be bought or made from simple material's. If you could find a battery pack and a LCD screen(commercialy purchased) you could make a on the road portable I guess. Unless you wanted something to hold in your hands.

I still think an X-box handheld portable is wayyy off. But, If people wanted to make a suitcase-xbox like the pelican case the celebs got... it might be possible. Batteries+modded/norm xbox+case+powersupply+hd screen (minimum 480p)+ some ideas....

I have a plan, but it will only be semi-portable and really expensive. First get two 7000 mah 6volt batteries (some site has them to lazy to look right now) then get 4 controllers, 4 screens, a few AA battery packs (not sure how many), and 4 wireless a/v transmittes, and one 12volt to 110 volt transformer. Put them all togther and you have four xbox screen controller things and your xbox running off of batteries. Only problem is that it wil fairly expensive around $500 I think.What do you think?

For the controllers and screens why not just use Hip screens.... though it better be somthing other then Halo or Halo2 as I have a hard time looking arcoss a map with half screen (on a 20") a 2.6" screen will really limit your fighting.

You could probably make it smaller it would just take a lot of work. I'm prttey sure the obo they use is found in some computers but it's definitley been modified for the xbox. It would be really cool if you could use one of these in a portable xbox.

If you mod the box first it will make the whole thing much easier...


Power Supply: No freaking clue
Batteries: No freaking clue
DVD Drive: None, keep the ethernet port, then ftp games onto the HDD
Hard Drive: Any Laptop drive, 10 gigs will hold the normal xbox stuff and about two games.
