Make way for HDTV?

Well as I'm sure most of you have read Ben's Future of Video Games article already, I have a question for all of you actually a poll. Could a forum 42 poll this for me?
Anyway: here's my question, are you swithing to HDTV or buy an adaptor?

1. You're buying a new TV to replace your ole' friend

2. You're buying a new TV for the new shiny games and movies, and also keeping your old 32" or whatever size TV for old games(cause who wants to throw out a perfectly aweosme family room TV?)

3. You're keeping your old TV and buying an adapter to make it compatible for the new games and compressed cable format cuz you're too poor to spring for a new one?

P.S.: Sorry if I'm getting too spammy, if I am please tell me so. I don't want to have any grief.

I dont think many people know this, but by the end of 2006 the FCC declaired that every station brodcast in HD format so they can phase out the UHF/VHF bands. They are doing this because it costs more money to maintain these allready crowded bands, and they are running out of bamdwith for new stuff.

I knew about this about 3 or 4 years ago when everyone was buying HDTV as an extra feature. In a year or 2 its going to be a standard. So why pay more money for it now? If you dont have HD abilities, you will need to buy a converter box that will take the signal and process it into RF, Composite, or S-Video.

Im gonna keep my 32" TV until i own a home and a can make a nice entertainment room. Then i will probabbly go HD DLP (or better) Projector.

I dont watch much TV (downloads, better yet, downloads of stuff that is shown on TV), so I dont know what I'll do, I guess I'll go with a cheaper set. I'll be in college when this happens, so I wont have to worry too much.

I dont know if the uk plans to have HDTV but i do know that the analog terrestial channels will be gone by 2010, replaced with the freeview digital boxes (of which i have one), its not high definition but just digital instead of analog

Officially as of now analog tv will end december 31 2006. This almost certainly will be extended to dec. 31 2008, and maybe even dec. 31 2009, but certainly no later. I will miss somewhat analog tv, but Im all for having HDTV.

Personaly i'm stuck with a crappy TV so HD dosn't really matter to me anyways. I will tho be buying a LCD monitor if I get a PS3 or Xbox 360. I just hope that when the PS3 comes out it will have a VGA cable... or better yet a DVI cable adapter like the Xbox 360.

EDIT: I don't know why they would be switching over to HD. I'ts not like theres a great number of people out there with HDTV capable TVs.

I heard about that, but unless they're gonna give me a HD tv to replace my old one, screw them!

/me still uses rf for lots of stuff

I really think that the switch should be much more gradual. I don't think that they even broadcast HDTV over the air in most cases yet, do they? Personally, I'm somewhat HDTV ready: my projector can take it without a problem, but that's it.

Don't confuse HD and digital broadcasts here, the FCC isn't forcing HD, they're forcing digital broadcasting. I'm guessing that most if not all TV stations will simply chose this time to change their broadcasts to HD as well. Also, the whole thing is about the FCC making more money, switching to digital means each channel will use up less bandwidth (in the analog sense) so they can cram more stations into the same amount of space. Really, it's kind of the FCC and television manufacturers getting together to make more money and screw the average consumer (because you WILL be forced into buying either a new TV or at least a box to convert the digital signal to analog so your current TV can display the content)

Well, it will be a bit more gradual than this is making it seem. Once the deadline comes all newly manufactured tvs will have to accept the digital signal, but broadcasters will have a little more time (a couple of years I think) to move over to actually broadcasting digitally. As kind of a weird side note, one TV station in my area actually started broadcasting both analog and digital several years ago, I think they knew this was coming and decided to be an early adopter.

I know if I do a "next film" it'll be in HD. Our current TV standard dates back to the 19-fricking-30's for crying out loud!
