Got a Theory
Does anyone have a theory on why console fighting games are never ported to the PC? Or just why there are no PC fighting games?

they used to be.
but the main delay with them is that at the time PC controllers were 2-button affairs. you had to hijack the second controller on the port to get all 6 buttons in them. They're not well suited to keyboards either. If you notice, PC games are *STILL* heavily tied to the use of the keyboard.
they're also not a 'pc game type' anymore. all you get now is FPS and RTS with an *occasional* flight or driving sim. where did adventure games go, how about platformers, turn-based strategy, heck, even puzzle games are on the downswing.
back in the day I had Super Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat (which was great), and virtua fighter, one must fall 2097, battlebeasts, rise of the robots--all before I gave up on PC gaming. I also had a really nice opensource one that stole sprites and moves from all the other fighting games. my selection screen had close to 100 fighters. ...what the heck was that called?

I'm not actually sure what it was called since I had mine skinned to street fighter 2: hyper fighting for so long that I lost track of the name. that looks like it, but this would have been ~1996-97.
something else that I didn't consider before is that maybe, just *maybe* emulation did fighting games in. You rarely saw fighting games beyond when neo*geo became readily emulatable, and you almost never saw one after cps1 was emulated.

Download Mo'Slo, a DOS slowdown utility. (I think a copy is at http://www.dosgames.com )
Then open the command prompt and enter stuff like this:
Where moslo is the program name, 30 is the percent speed you want to run at (leave blank to default to 8086 speed IIRC), and path/to/game is the path to the game executable.
Moslo will only run exe and com files, but I don't know of any games that run off of .bat files.
Then open the command prompt and enter stuff like this:
Code: Select all
C:\moslo 30 C:\path\to\game\exec.exeMoslo will only run exe and com files, but I don't know of any games that run off of .bat files.

there's also a few dos emulation programs out there. The xbox one works great. and it lets me select that gravis ultrasound I could never quite afford back in the day.
I really like the emulated base memory too
I'll probably be running mugen on it when I get home. 320x200 resolution and vesa driver my rear!
oh, and thanks... you've all gotten the omf2097 title music stuck in my head...

1997-98ish sounds about right for when I found out about it. I had a couple different skins for it, a ton of fighters, and a program to edit sprites and such for it. One of the best things about it (aside from it being open source and having several hundred characters to choose from) was how easy it was to edit stats for just about everything in the game.Reaperman@home wrote:I'm not actually sure what it was called since I had mine skinned to street fighter 2: hyper fighting for so long that I lost track of the name. that looks like it, but this would have been ~1996-97.
I remember trying that quite a few years ago, and was having the same problem. I didn't even consider that my computer may have just been running it too fast, I may have to look into that againwallydawg wrote:OMF 2097 was awesome. I still have it, but it runs way too fast now.

New Fighting Games suck, if I was you, get an emulator, and get a rom of Mortal Kombat 2 (wether you try illegailly, that's your choice), ther best fighting game evr in opinion, I had Mugen once, but I couldn't find enough characters to use with it, I might try and get my Street Fighter character set back.

Somebody please buy my Dreamcast >_> £20+shipping

I have never heard of Mugen, but will have to see if I can find it. I have Virtual Fighter 2 for PC, which is still awesome after all these years. I also have Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for PC but it is not very 3D, it was awesome for the Playstation though.
it does seem that PC games are mostly FPS now. I would like to see some new strategy games. Total Annihilation is my favorite PC strategy game, very cool.
