New Orleans WI-FI

Post by Radon199 »

Just saw this story on Daily Planet.

New Orleans will be the first City in America to have WI-FI available to every person in the city free. They are placing WI-FI antennas on top of the telephone poles in the city providing free WI-FI access to anyone with a wireless device (such as a laptop or a PSP) anywhere they want (within the grid).

Could you imagein this? Being able to search the web from your PSP or stream mp3s (with the RSS function in your PSP). You could have a 32 MB card and be able to accesss gigabytes of mp3s or movie files without the need to buy a bigger card.

I had heard they were doing this (pre katrina plans) and it's nice to see they've moved up their timetable.

Just to remind everybody, I have less than 30 days left before my cross-country move to New Orleans, and every bit of good news helps me cope

the down side to this service is that it will be slow, and monitored by a city government afraid to death of getting sued. I know I don't have to mention what that means for blocked sites and services.

currently private wifi companies are the only source of internet in much of the city.

Still even if it's slow, it will still be an amazing service. I mean, I can't even count the times i've been somewhere where their is no internet and realize or see something I really want to cheak out, now, when people in New Orleans get this darn fealing they want to look something up, they can pull out their PSP or PC and look it up.
