I can't agree with this either. DRM is kind of fishy, but I type this....

As I stare at my dual Sony Trinitron displays, next to my Sony DVD writer, on my computer storing info from my movie filmed with two Sony cameras, with my Sony digital camera sitting here that I used for my book, with my PS2 in the living room, as I listen to music on my Sony receiver (hooked to computer) with my OTHER old Sony camcorder only feet from me, the one that replaceed my first even older Sony camcorder from 1992... And yes, drinking beer I bought after driving my car to the store, equipped with a Sony stereo....

I dunno! I've always bought Sony stuff. It's never failed me, I have no complaints. This DRM fiasco is bad, sure. But Sony owns a music company and a movie company. Why wouldn't they be more paranoid about piracy?

Look at the Apex "I'll play a paper plate!" players from Wal-Mart. They'll play anything, and why would APEX care? Like it or not, Sony has an investment in the future of secure digital media. They've made a mistake, sure. But it's too be understood, and we shouldn't give up on them for it.

True, but still, just a little copyright protection on a computer might be acceptable, but making it so you can't PLAY something on another LEGAL machine? That's just hateful!

True enough. I look around my house and notice all of my TV (vcr, DVD, amp, etc) equipment is Sony. I have a Sony walkman, and a Sony 'Big Ass Radio and CD player'. I've considered buying the PSP (prices are what end up shying me away), and many CDs I own are Sony made.

Am I a Sony FanyBoy?

No. Not by a long shot.

I think Sony has done some fantastic work for electronic devices. They were the first company that didn't orginally make VGs (ignoring Nintendo's Cardgame past), and made a successful franchise in the market. I'm still not completely endeared to them. Any Sony products I have weren't boughten because "I wouldn't buy from any other company". I have Panasonic stuff too. And Toshiba, and etc.

Spongey has a point. I don't like where Sony is trying to take their products. Why would they spend money on DRM if they weren't going to use it? Can we really trust them not to use rootkit? And what if they try to press charges on the EULA crap?

I'm no Sony fanboy, and these developments have only served to make me weary to buying their products.

I miss the good old days. When Sony wasn't pulling crap. When VGs were for fun, not analysis and partisanship.

These new times frighten me.

I have some Sony stuff too, but they are not my favorite company. I would love to see them dethroned in the gaming arena. One thing I do not understand though is this DRM you guys are talking about. I heard the rumor that Spongey posted, about how the PS3 discs can only be played in one system, but I don't see how this is possible unless they include a Blu-Ray burner in the system and make the discs writable. Otherwise, how is the game going to know that it is being played in another machine? If they do this, I will definitely not buy their system, because I usually rent games before buying. Them using, or not using, this technology could decide their fate this generation.

EULA is End User Licence Agreement. Most software providers make you agree to them before you install their software. It is pretty much a binding contract between you and the company. (Sorry for the double post.)

I'm sorry to disagree, but Sony made that investment by making it clear they will have a ton (yes a ton!) of new DRM impossed on the new Blueray. I personally dont think they should be making the next CD or DVD and putting all this crap on it.

Sony's reason for all this DRM and parinoia is that they cant accept the fact that CDs are becoming outdated, digital media is not restricted to a physical disc and fighting your customers is only going to cause you more problems, they better be glad that they're not members of BBB or they'd be screwed now.

I'm not going to argure at all with the quality of they electronics, hell I'm using a Sony DVD +/- RW DL burner. Its the best one I've seen yet. But all the quality in the world isnt going to help you if your customers hate your business practices.

Truer words were never spoken.

People are really starting to care not just what their product's companiy makes, but also what it does. Especially if the activities directly affect them.

If John Doe sees that Company 1 makes a product that does thing as Company 2's product, but Company 1 has an extra "user agreement" that limits use of their product, John Doe is going to buy Company 2's product.

What would you do?

Sony is hoping that if they install DRM in their PS3 that people will buy the PS3 not knowing it's there. But after a week people are gonna share disks and the sherade will be over and everyone will be pissed.

I mean whats it suppose to do? Even if someone has a PS3 it's not like they can just hock there PS3 up to their PC and copy the files from the disk. It takes a PC to make backups, not just a PS3.

I have some sony stuff: two stereos, PS2, PS2 games, walkman from the 80's, but all of my TV's and my vcr are Toshiba which is a very good brand if I may add.

After reading this thread i checked my house and found, i acctually dont own anything sony, it came as quite a shock, i expected to have at least something :)

I gave up the whole console market shortly after i bought a gamecube, but its PC all the way these days

The only console i really play (now and again) is my good ol' n64

Although i can see why sony is doing this, but enough is enough all good and well protecting against piracy but if it alienates your market then you've failed, way to go.

I can't blame Sony for DRM. That's how they're gonna get the studioes to jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon.

DVD was delayed for a few years simply because Hollywood kept asking to "make it more secure" Of course it ended up getting hacked anyway. Regardless, they're gonna want the most secure format for HD discs. If Sony provides it, then Blu-Ray will win out over HD-DVD. It is in their interest to make it really secure to win the next format war.

What's so bad about protecting stuff? iTunes and iPods all use digitally licensed music, authenticated CPU's, all that jazz. Sony's just a big bad wolf for people to rip on.

Don't forget China! Something like 90% of the media (music/DVDs/games) in that country is bootleg. Doing the math, that's 900,000,000 people [potentially] not paying for digital media.

The market for Asian pirated stuff really flourished in the 90's as the original PS1 would play VCD's. I'm sure Sony wants to remedy these problems. 900 million people not buying stuff is a HUGE potential loss.

I HIGHLY DOUBT the PS3 games will only work on the first system they're played in. That's just ridiculous.

Remember if you hack an XBox that YOU OWN and try to log onto XBox Live the service will FRY your XBox in retaliation. That's a lot more extreme than DRM.

I didn't like when Sony beat out the N64, a system I considered to be a lot better than the PS1. But I got over it. The simply truth is DRM or no, the PS3 is gonna PWN the Revolution with both hands behind its back.

Nintendo fans should be more worried about the Xbox 360. Sony can't do much more damage to Nintendo, but Microsoft can.

Im not with the whole Sony hating bandwagon, because as ben said, they do make some good stuff. I have a SONY camcorder, and for portables you can use the SONY infolithium battery! So I dont really hate them, I just dont like the way they make their games.

The thing is that the whole DRM security thing is one big cycle. They make a new security method, a while later hackers or who ever find a way to crack it. They've tried doing this for oh what over 5 years and really for the most part failing.

Further they have gone to the point where they're destroying the "fair use" act and that isnt about money its about I want to use something like a 2 minute clip of this video but I cant touch it as the whole things is locked. Sony is only making themselfs look like greedy people just about as bad a Microsoft the way they do this securty DRM crap.

And Ben the thing with the Xbox. If you mod the Xbox (hardmod) and connect to the Xbox-live network they will lock your account and prevent you from using the credit card you used before to make a new account, if they see it. Or if you do mod it (softmod) and you mistakenly hit the Xbox-live buttion on the dashboard it will restore your Xbox to default removing linux or any other files you installed.

To be blunt I bought the system, if I mod it thats my business. But to have software erased or be denied any "legal" munipulation of the code I dont see a problem. If I want to make my Xbox360 (if I get one) run Mac OS X thats my business, I dont want Microsoft calling up or sending me a message that what I did is wrong.

I want fair use and I want companies like Sony to realize if put root kits on your customers computers and open them up to security issues you better damn be prepared to face the consequences. And more the the point I want fair use back!
