The rush to be the "first" system out usually ends up hurting you in the long run. Anyone remember the turbo-grafx 16? (besides us geeks)

I can see one of two different outcomes from this being a "rare" system, either the shortage (percieved or actual) will make a lackluster system more desireable and a "must-have" for people or it will frustrate people that they can't have one right now. It will all boil down to the quality and quantity of games available for each system when they are selling side-by-side on the shelf.

I'm no brand loyal fanboy or MS hater, I own both a PS2 and an xbox (among others) If given a choice to buy a game that is available on both systems, I usually pick up the xbox version because I feel the system is technically superior to the PS2 (which it should be because the xbox is younger) and I hate memory cards.

I think the xbox 360 shortage is a completely idiotic idea. From what I've read, it's being done as a publicity stunt. The reality is, the people that play them already know of all 3 possibilities. They know what they want. They could sell a whole lot more at that same price if they could just give it to them. (Side note: I saw Call of Duty on display at a store, didn't look like anything special, just a good current gen game)

As for the PS3, Sony has a chance with a patent they obtained. A chance to make the system go to hell, and make everyone hate them. This is DRM. What this does is make it so a game cannot be used in more than one system. Once you put it in one system, you're done. You can't take that game to your friend's house. You can't sell it to Gamestop. You can't buy a cheap game from Gamestop. You can't buy a collector's game on ebay in 20 years, unless it's sealed. if your PS3 breaks (which is pretty likely with Sony's track record) you have to buy all your games all over again. Granted, this "feature" is not confirmed but I don't think Sony would spend money on this patent just for the hell of it.

Edit: I think the PS3 will be not more, not less, but $400 (well, $399.99)

(uh oh, I think I just took this off topic... sorry :( )

I heard about that too, Sponge. It seems like they'll certainly be implementing it since they patented it. It seems to me like they're shooting themselves in the foot, but I suppose since they've had so much success with the Playstation 1 and 2 that they think they're invincible. Well, no company is. Look at Nintendo. Nintendo was leading by far in the videogaming market until their N64. That's when they lost their lead when they made several crucial mistakes. Nintendo isn't by any means going down any time soon but they still don't have that lofty position of number 1 they used to have.

As for the Xbox 360, I think the shortage will most likely be bad for it. By the time more arrive, the PS3 will almost be there and more people will be willing to wait just a bit longer for a PS3. It all really comes down to the games for the Xbox 360. I know people who got an Xbox for the sole reason of playing Halo, so people will do the same this generation if Microsoft gets an exclusive title for their 360 that knocks people off their feet.

I disagree with Ben, however, in the fact that Sony will keep the pricing under $400. There's such advanced technology in that (namely the Cell processor) that'll cost a whole bunch to manufacture, so I just can't believe that they'll be able to keep it at such a low price. Besides, Sony's president has stated that they want people to work harder so that they can afford the PS3. Obviously Sony won't be doing too much to try and keep the pricing of the PS3 too low if they just expect their customers to work harder to pay for their hardware. If they do manage to pull it off though, I see the Xbox 360 dying completely due to the superior hardware offered in the PS3.

Well, as for any rushed next gen technology, there will be flaws. I have to admit, N does their homework when it comes to designing things. Im not a HUGE N fan, but they are my prefrence for the technology. I agree with Ben about the whole "milk the classics" deal. For a while i thought that was just a pathetic attempt from nintendo to renew their classic games copyright so they can crack down on the emulation some more. I also dont like the games for the cube. Im an adult, I dont care for pokemon, or dora the explorer games.

Since the 1st Discman i have not liked sony. They are the reason i buy extended warentys. Im on my 4th PS2 allready, and no, i havent done anything to it (well, i modded it, but thats not went wrong). With sony releasing a seriousally bad DRM hacker rootkit to FORCE DRM on your PC, and giving hackers a fun easy new way to script kiddie their way into your lives to prove their leetness, thats one more tick on the "Bang sony in the conrnhole" board. If sony does that Self Destruction lock thing, im not getting a PS3. And im sure we could all start some kind of gay online petition to show sony how serious we all are. I still probabbly wont get one until we know what kind of suicidal tendencies the console has.

Microsoft are all soppy sperm dumpsters. They got the Xbox 1 right, but after i chipped it and got some kick ass free programs like xbox media center, linux, and Region Free DVD player. Microsoft has and always be scumbags that need to compensate for their small penis' with large bills. Ever since day one MS has scumbagged their way into power, much like that fag hitler.

MS spent 2 years on the copy protection in the X360, think they could have taken 45 minutes out of that time to add a simple fan to the PSU? NO! Why? They want to make sure their console cant run backups. Hell, if they did what the Game Park 2x is doing and support homebrew, maybe they just might be forgiven. But as long as there are little groups out there willing to make better products for free, MS will be there to smash them.

Nintendo is too exclusive with their released information. I dunno much about WTF is going on with that. If nintendo can grow up and bit and make some "old people" games, then they might stand a chance. I love my cube, and i love the graphics, but sweet zombie jebus, there are so few games for people over 15. Starfox assualt was SO dissappointing. Then again... woodland creatures waging war in space... i can SO see that happening in 100 years! lol

Lets hooe N actually supports their accessories this time, like the "why did i get this for ONE GAME!" modem and broadband adapter. There is ONE reason i use my BBA, and thats homebrew. Mario Kart and Kirby Double Dash are not good enough reasons for a BBA. And WTF uses the modem besides phantasy star online?

Two things:

1. I'm curious which console you all think will be successful. Not which one you like but which one you think OTHERS will like. Pollified.

2. Also, what do you think will be the 'hot gift' this season?

I have been gaming for a long time, and I have participated in the past 3 generations of console launches on launch day. Hardware shortages are nothing new. The Xbox 360 is no different that the PS2 in terms of launch.

I remember going to my local Wal-Mart on the date of the PS2 launch in October of 2000 and waiting in line for hours. There were about 200 people in line to get a console. Our Wal-Mart only had about 20 to sell. I was one of the lucky few who got one. If you guys remember, it was hard to get a PS2 for months.

Personally, I think that this shortage will not hurt Microsoft, because it definitely didn't hurt Sony. As far as the comments about the graphics of the Xbox 360, did you see first generation PS2 games? They pretty much looked like crap when compared to today's games. We need to remember that these are the first games for the system, of couse they won't look as good as we think they should.

Also, a few hardware bugs are the norm for new console launches. Again, the PS2 has it's fair share of them. My PS2 was plauged (sp?) with disc read errors and the like. If someone wants a console at launch, get an extended warranty like I did with the PS2 and the 360.

I am not a Microsoft fanboy. I have a Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360, but I do know how the industry works. Shortages build hype, and hype over a new system is generally a good thing.

Well, i think the main point of the whole 360 problem is that many people pre-orderd or waited on a line for HOURS just to realise that their X360 is a paperweight. Now thay will have to wait hella' long to get it replaced cause M$ doesnt want to get off their butts to make more? Arent they going to have a mass recall anyways? Im not going to vote on who is going to win this one. It all depends on marketing ploys and hardware stability, none of which can accurateally predicted. Im sure the Revoloution will be solid as a brick. N has always had an awsome record for having stable hardware. Sony is suisidal, and M$ are just a bunch of money grubbing whores. I think this bad media for Sony and MS just might help nintendo's sales a little. Weather or not sony decides to use their DRM or not, there are still millions of people that regtretted buying a V1-4 PS2. Im sure they will remember how pissed they were when they had to shell out another $200 for a replacement PS2. The xbox has somewhat unimpressive games, and this mass overheating issue. Besides the fact the N serves the younger demographic, they could make it to the top this time arround.

All electronics have bugs to begin with, plain and simple, that's why warranties exist. Microsoft is making as many consoles as they can, and will replace your console if it is bad. In fact, they are shipping out about 100,000 consoles per week from their 2 factories (which are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week making the Xbox 360) in China. I read that on both IGN and Gamespot.

I agree that Nintendo does make great, quality consoles, but I am sure some people had problems with their Gamecubes last generation at launch.

Heck, when the DS launched last year, they had what, one good game, Super Mario 64DS, a port from the N64. Look at it now, it has lots of good games.

I did some research on the recall that you mentioned, and MS said that there is no recall planned because the problem is not that widespread. My 360 works perfectly. Granted, some people are having problems, but it happens with every console launch and is the exception rather than the rule. I also read that on Gamespot.

While I agree with you about Nintendo, I respectfully disagree with you about MS being "a bunch of money grubbing whores." They, like most hardware manufacturers, take a loss on their hardware. The real money is in the software. I do however respect your opinionl. :)

Read up on how M$ got into the industry with nothing more than lies, lies, and more lies. Im not meaning M$ are money hungry for the xbox, im mean they are seriousally money hungry PERIOD. They have set out to destroy every competetor UTTERLY. Now they have Linux targeted. They might seem "family friendly" now, but so did hitler towards the germans. Its all a perspective thing. Im not anti-microsoft, but i am pro-choice. I cant get linux working 100% on the majority of my new hardware because its all microsoft certified... Go watch a decent movie called Pirates of Silicon Valley. It will explain how both Apple and M$ got into the market, and how HUGE of a doushe bag Gates was.
