It sounds like this might be the case. That's... pretty bad. Like, maybe even system-killingly bad. (That and the SUV sized power supply)
I'm writing a future of videogame article and I wonder if I should take this shortage into effect. If nobody else gets consoles for a few months even, what's even the point of Microsoft having a year lead (or 5 month lead in Japan) over PS3?
Think of it, since Christmas is the big season, for all intents and purposes all 3 consoles will "Christmas it up" for the first time in 2006. All a spring US launch will get is the hardcore gamers and expensive birthday presents through the year.
Microsoft's rush might end up not helping but just make them look bad... I don't know. Before I heard about this shortage I'd have said XBox 360 taking an even bigger chunk out of Nintendo for the next-gen (but still not beating Sony) Plus the rush will result in "buggier than normal" consoles. Already people are putting the power supply on boxes and things so it doesn't overheat! Pathetic.
If nobody gets 360's til March the price might not even come down before next Christmas. $400 minimum versus a $200 Revolution... and Nintendo might just have its revenge.
People on here get the impression I'm anti-Nintendo. That's not entirely true, I'm just anti "release a new Gameboy each year along with repackaged NES/SNES games to shore up sales" I've liked all their consoles.
I actually like the Gamecube a lot more than the Xbox, and would relish seeing Nintendo kick some butt. That said I still think PS3 will reign supreme and not cost more than $400. But that's not the issue here, 360 shortages is.
Discuss here! Go nuts!

Are you kidding me?
The Xbox 360 is not impressive, PS3 has two graphics cards, as apposed to the 360. The graphics are O.K., but Call of duty (for the 360)'s grapics can compare to Halo 2. Besides, I just played a game for the xbox 1, (Shooter, millitary) and the graphics could have compared to a N64. Wow microsoft...arghhh.
Being poor as a dog I have always been pro Nintendo and their cheap, yet suerprizingly for the cost, very reliable systems.
I like the 360, I really like the PS3 and I really really like the Revolution and I think Microsoft won't feel much of a dent even if the 360 has a 5 month shortage. Last time I went to my local EB games they were into their forth... count em, fourth shipment of preorders for the 360 proving that allot of people want the 360.
Microsoft seems to be taking a bit of a gamble releasing a year before everyone else, that just gives Sony and Nintendo a chance to take grasp of even better technology than when the 360 launched.

i agree with ben, PS3 will eat it up and poop it out then burn the poop and eat it again. 360 isn't all that much of an improvement over the current gen (a little better, just not worth the price better) but PS3 is clearly like woah. 360 will most likely end up like saturn, just not quite as bad

Yeah the shortage will definitely have an imapct on the system's market share. If there are only so many systems out there until February, then why would software developers make games for it until it's more widely avalible?
The answer: They wouldn't. Why would you want make games for the tens, or hundreds, of thousands of 360 owners when you can make the same game for the Xbox/PS2/GCN generation, and millions of copies can be sold? No reason at all. It simply won't turn as much of a profit as it would for making games for the older systems. Sort of like how people hack into Windows PCs by a signifigantly higher margin than -nix based boxes? More people have Windows than Unix/Linux, so they target the masses rather than a select few. Not that people don't hack *nix, it jsut isn't as common as Windows hacking. (OK that's kind of a negative example; but you get the idea.)
Really I think the 360, like some of M$'s other projects, was a rush job they threw out well before it became reasonable to use and buy, jsut to stay a step ahead of everyone else to be on "the cutting edge" of technology. Well, I believe this is what will doom the 360. MS should have worked on it some more until it was more than "stable enough".
This actually works to the benefit of Nintendo and Sony; they still have their next gen consoles in development, so they still have time to debug and streamline their code for the final product. And they also have time to make up a pile of consoles to be ready for their release dates. The luxury of time was something MS has, but they threw it out the window so they could stay ahead ofeveryone else.
Bottom line:
I believe the Xbox 360 will be Microsoft's Dreamcast. It will fail because of lack of avalibility. All the people who froze to near death outside Wal*Mart that fateful November day will be crying their eyes out as their fanboy-beloved system falls into obscurity, and some of them may inflict self-harm or dive into deep depression over it. (OK so I may be exagerating
).
A system that jumped the gun gets hit by the bullet. Oh the iorny!
DISCLAIMER: Please don't hate me for my beliefs. Everyone has opinions. Just because I hate MS, but see them as a necessary evil doesn't make me a bad person (except if you're Bill Gates). You have your opinions, I have mine. And I expect everyone to be mature in discussion about the next generation game systems, just as you must expect it from me. Thank you for reading, and please don't kill me! lol
Oh and if you want to copy any of this for the article, go right ahead. All I ask for is credit in a footnote. (:

As you said, Ben, the issue is availability. It'll work on two major time scales. First is short term. This christmas is gonna be "wasted", with this new 360 development and the fact that there are no other huge VG developments/consoles/games (already heard nasty stuff about 'Path of Neo' which was supposed to be big). By the time 2006 roles around, MS's gaming department will be in deep s** and near death.
That said we hit a snag in predictions. One of two things will happen:
1. People will get antsy and when other consoles start shipping out, people will want more, now. This new rush to make and ship out consoles could result in another 360 disgrace for Sony and Nintendo and might create a major crash in the VG market.
2. Sony and Nintendo WON'T be stupid and will take their time in producing their product (like any intelligent company would, MS!). In that case, we'll see a flourish in VGing in the companies and support.
At that point, we'll need to pray that game developers don't drop the ball and we won't have to rely on the console makers for games. (if that does happen, I see big wins for Nintendo
)
And in the way of prices, if #1 comes to pass, prices will obviously drop. But if it turns to be #2, I see a small price increase possible, but not much. Nintendo is pretty well known for low prices, don't see any reason for them to screw that up.
Peace and Predictions

i figure the 360 sortage will not change any thing that this is infact just part of microsucks plan, then i here from my friend who works for future shop (canadian bestbuy) that when they had 60 360 preorders microsoft gave then 15 live and 15 core, well thats 30 short to begin with but none of the preorders where core systems. so 15 of 60 people are getting x-boxs from future shop

yeah i dont know i think the ps3 wont sell vary well, and microsuck will bounce back, then i guess revolution will do pritty well as expected ok but not so great because its difrent looking and still strange even to me. although its new controller and low price might just do the trick to keep it above in console sales.
heres my bets.
japan: rev sony microsuck
northamerica: microsuck REV sony (psp mostly)
europe... who knows probly rev or microsuck then sony.

Thats one problem for Microsoft. Their systems sell well in NA but as far as Euro and Japan things arn't as popular. Where as Sony and Nintendo have a huge fan base in Japan as well as a huge fan base in NA. The fact that Microsoft only has a small sales department in Japan will really lend to their downfall.
