pictures of ideas

Post by timmeh87 »

I figured we needed a new thread.

Ive started a website to sort of document my experience building a portable n64. right now most of the pages are just a reminder to myself to put something better there later...

but theres some 3d pictures of a possible layout for the parts.

Are you really gonna have rumble?

So are we supposed to post case designs then? Cuz I have quite a few.

Having an internal rumble pack isn't a good idea beause not only does it take up room, but also risks damage to your portable. The N64p that I'm currently working on will have everything from a rumble pak except the motor in the unit, then have wires from the unit to the motor which will be in a separate case, straped on your wrist.

thats actually quite a clever idea nos.

but. I wanna try putting it inside first... they way i picture it in my head, its not very close to anything sensitive. dont worry. im an engineer ;) (i think it is actually illegal for me to say that if im not actaully an engineer. which im not. but i will be. when im done school.)

..and Xbox controllers have rumble motors built right in.

Cool idea nos, but I would worry about somone "abusing" the rumble.

BTW, I don't really like rumble, it messes me up when I am playing. So I ripped all the motors out of my controllers and stuck them in Ben's PS2 case (The one he used for his PS2p. I bought it from him) with a battery, and added some switches on the bottom. I then would lay it on the ground outside my frineds house, mention to him that I saw waht looked like a PS2 mini on the ground and then whatch as he runs out to pick it up. It was really funny to watch him jump back when as ssona she picks it up it starts rumbling like there is a demon inside orsomething, he must have jumped like 7 feet backwards

But controllers aren't as sensitive as mobos, and if they have a screen attached, it's usually able to move, so some of the shock is absorbed.

I like the way you think!

I thought about using the external rumble a while back, but I need to see how well it works. I may need to up the input voltage a bit, if the rumble is too weak.

Double post! It's okay though, it's for a good reason. I was talking to another member(jeroen) via PM earlier, and I was telling him that one of my ideas for the rumble pack is a break-away cable for it. I made up a diagram of how I plan to make it work:
Image

The blue piece(shown as a cross section) wired to the N64p is a rectangular box with one open side where you slide a small cut of circuit board in. The brown lines in the center of that box is yet to be decided, but it is something to create just enough friction to keep the circuit board in, but remain loose enough to let it come out . I am thinking of a small plastic teeter totter with a spring on one side, so when you push it in, the low side comes up to help keep the circuit connected.

instead of making things complicated, why not just do it like an xbox... find a male and female connector of some sort, and just do that. if you look somewhere like digikey they probably have enough male/female connectors to make your head spin.

I thought about that, but I'd still have to do something to make it come apart easier, because most break-away cords that I've seen(such as the XBOX) don't come apart easily enough, and are more of a selling point. I forgot the other idea I had, magnets. It would be easier and more effective to use small magnets with the wires attached.

magnets are an amazing idea... it would just always snap together the right way. you should use magnets.

i have one of these near me, in ontario. They sem pretty proud of the strength of their magnets.

the 1/8" rod magnet looks like it would do the trick. its only 3 bucks for 10 of them...

You might take a look at the magents used for cabinets. I think some of those have two mtel plates in the middle which would work.

Tamiya connectors hold together too tightly as do deans connectors.
How about SIP connectors?

most motors aren't polarized, but wiring them a certain way makes it go left or right....for a rumble motor, though, it doesn't matter, of course ;)
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I openned one of my rumble paks today, and sure enough, it was as simple as I thought it would be. It doesn't appear to be polarized(yet I still have to test it), which should make it easier.

(Sorry, I was going to post more, but it's almost 1am, and I've been up since 4am yeasterday)
