The thick leads on a car battery are for the starter,most cars use at least a 4ga positive directly to the starter and the main line branches off from that. The main line to the fuse panel of my car is 10ga. There isn't anything bigger than 14ga coming off the fuse panel. Including the 18ga that goes to the ignition coil.

I have a high compression V8 in my car and need a lot of amps to spin over the starter. It will over heat a 4ga positive wire, my positive is 2ga and my ground is 0ga.

Trust me I wired my entire car from scratch and did a lot of research first.

The reason they have huge leads under the hood are because the alternator needs a massive amount of current to turn over the engine, and same with the current going to the spark plugs.

The alternator doesn't turn over the engine, the starter does. The alternator charges the battery and only puts out on average 50 Amps, a starter uses 300+ Amps. An alternator charge wire is usually 10-8 Ga.

The only reason the spark plug wires are big is shielding. They take 40,000 volts at a very low amperage, which would interfere with the radio if they weren't shielded. They aren't copper either they are usually graphite. That voltage is achieved by the ignition coil that only takes around 10-15 amps.

The ONLY reason for the big leads is the starter, nothing else. The rest of the car is run on a 12-8 Ga wire.

He's right about the wire sizes. If I was going to power something by backpack I'd forget about lead-acid (lead=heavy, acid = painful) and use the "dynabatt" or similair battery that is sealed.

What kind of baby do you have?

I'm stuck with a 70 hp civic right now, but I've been in Hot Rod before with a couple different cars. I've got 5 pages of typed certifications from ASE, Ford(and relatives) and Dodge(and relatives), so if anyone has any car related questions you can send them my way.

You could always use one of those wire things you see on busses. You know the ones that scrape along the cables and transfer electricity down the pole. You could have a small battery that could power it for maby 5 minutes if you run out of Power poles to tap into, then you could also have a 5-10 ft roll up extention cable for when you go inside.
