M64 revival

Tested today, and found out my n64 wasnt dead, so i started trying to desolder stuff off the board..

Good News:
I successfull removed the 1-2 controller ports and the power adapter.. its the first thing ive succesfully desoldered.. the other control ports and a/v out port is givin me a hard time tho..

what are the magnets for that are on top of the chips..? are they ok to remove because they kinda just fell off of thier own..??

theyre not magnetys, theyre heatsinks, they cool it, you afre going to have to replacethem with some form of metal before you play for any extended period.

I know im going to have to replace them, while testing the system for approx 20 minutes they were almost too hot to touch.. I can just get some sort of a small heatsink from radioshack or somethin right?

i only figured they were magnets cause they wernt fasined on by anything and they had a little bit of hold still..

They are held on a little by suction from the thermal tape under them (the gray stuff between the heatsink and the IC). Also, a little heatsink from radioshack probably isn't going to do the trick. The little metal blocks on each IC mainly served the purpose of transfering the heat to the much larger heatsink that was across the entire board (the one on top of the shielding). So if you want to replace them with individual heatsink's you're going to need something a little bulkier (width/length wise, not necessarily depth).

well, ben used some of the ones that looks like the bottom of the 'the pit' in mortal kombat with the spikes.. im pretty such ive seen those around somewhere so ill try to pick up some of them..

The drawings I've found around here do nothing but hurt my eyes so I'm working on a sketch of how I'm assuming its all suppose to be put together.. hopefully someone will tell me if I have the right idea..

Go to www.allelectronics.com and you'll find some good heatsinks you can use.

Yup, I used two of those in my n64. Grab some thermal compound also while you're there.
