I dont completely understand what you aare saying.
The logs are plain text files on the computer, if the log files are gone, there is little to no chance you can recover them. If they have recently been lost, you might be able to recover them using data reconstruction. Its the same thing the governement uses to restore deleted files and formatted disks to get the information from sieized computers. Thats right boys and girls, deleting files doesnt mean its not there. Same thing for formatting. The data can still be recover'd. Here is an evil idea, buy SD and CF cards on ebay, reconstuct the deleted data, and see if there is any usefull info. Phishing couldnt be any easier! People SEND YOU their info tinking they actually formatted or deleted it. HAH! Just as secure as NT/XP passwords *laughs meniacally*
As for the passwords, if you have them saved on a client, get a program called Snadboy's Revelation. If you are lucky it will let you see behind the ******* masked password. If you dont have the password saved in your client, then you are just boned. Im not going to get into how to "recover passwords" from computers or software. its too easy to use the info for the wrong reasons. You have no idea how many computers I have found in the trash that still had tons of data saved that was recoverable and could have been used to cause them some major damage. If Revelation doesnt work, then thats the end of it. And NO! you cant hack the server for the password, thats a crime. No if-ands-or-butts about it.

I have a related question. Say I want to download something, say lymewire. I only want a few files off lyme wires, so Id uninstall it after i got it. Would there be any trace at all of it on the system if I uninstalled it,and moved the stuff I downloaded off the computer?

I have Adaware. What do I do, just a system scan, and delete all the files?

if you want to see if you are being monitored, and you are running Windwos 2000/XP, you could always see which applications and processes are running, and google each one. If you find something that deals with AIM, other than AIM itself, you could end that process

shoot, forgot to say that in my original post
press ctrl-alt-delete, and your screen will change to a dialog box with 6 buttons (at least on 2000, may be a bit different with XP) Click on "task manager" (again, may be a bit different with XP) and your screen will go back to normal, with the exception of a new box there. First check the applications. It probably won't be there, but it will be easy to spot. Then, check Processes. It should be somewhere in there, if it's on.

If they are runnng packet sniffers, they can track where all the data is coming from and going to on the network. Example, all info from any IP address on port 80 or 8080 is web. Anything on 5190 is AIM. all they need to do is run a packet sniffer and configure it to capture by either port, IP, MAC, source, or destination. They dont need to be running anything on your local machine. Any network that insalls loggers on all their systems are grossly oudated... everyone uses packet sniffers now.
I use AirSnare and Etherreal to make sure noone tried to break into my wifi network, and if they do, all forigen MAC address activity is logged.
