Post by GamingRev »

My parents always threaten me and say they moniter my aim logs. My dad has not much of an idea what hes doing on a computer, but my stepmom does so can they...or are they just scaring me?

I really doubt that, but to be sure, delete your internet history and cookies.

also parents have the habbit of using scare tactics on kids it only works if your afraide of your parnents and no one should be afraid of some one dumb enough to use scare tactics, if they talked to you about what ever it is that they where worried about on the other hand... then there would be no reason to worrie, so just go and ask your parents what there concerns are and try and meet an understanding. I tryed this with my step dad (who my mother helped me sneek in and out of the house at night because he was so paranoid that i was trying to be a coke head, when realy i was just a pro pot activist) any ways didnt work with my step dad but it worked with my mom who was smart enoughf to listen to my belefs (my step dad yelled at me once for 45 minutes because i said I think people sould explore alternitve energy). so I made fun of him every time i talked to him my mom devorced him and is now with a realy cool guy.

I went of track there but just talk to them and they wont have a choice but to leave you be if you are mature and aproch the topic reasonalby.

If you have your own computer than change the password to something only you know. If they ask you why you changed your password than you know they are trying to get onto your PC and prolly cheaking the internet history and other junk.

To answer your question yes they could be looking at your logs. A quick search on google found this http://www.effetech.com/aim-sniffer/ It logs and monitors AIM chats on computers over a Lan, and it seems easy to set up so your mom or dad could have easily set it up.

if you are so worried, id reccomend looking around on your computer with Servant Salamander to find these "AIM Logs"

you could either find a program that is doing this (they are very discrete in the name usually)

or find the actual text or HTML files that are being saved.

and chances are they dont exist, and your parents aren't very good at parenting...

Don't worry they probably aren't monitoring it. If they are then delete the program files for the program that they are using.

There are a few programs that will allow you to monitor aim logs. Any network packet monitor can view the messages.

If you do delete the files, see if you can delete something vital but dons't stop the program, just stops it from sniffing around your PC, then they will still use it to monitor you but it's technicaly not monitering anything.

Its hella' easy to monitor any IMs. I see it used in buisness' all the time. IMAdministrator is just one of the many "point and click" programs. There is also AimSniff (or is it AimSnarf). Just google AIM Packit Sniffer.

If you want to counteract their efforts to monitor you, get an IM client that supports "encryption". I use trillian. The thing is, the person u are chatting with has to have the same client. If your parents CAN capture the IM, it will look like garbage data. Now, this isnt foolproof. I have cracked trillian Secure IMs with little effort, but if your parents dont know squat about computers, i doubt they can break the Secure-IMs.

I dont think its right for anyone to spy on anyone for whatever reason. Everyone is entitled to their own prvacy. But if you abuse that right, i believe it should be taken away. The best thing to do is not to use AIM to conspire with your friends. Dont give your parents a reason to spy on you.

I log all important network traffic at my house. My friends come over for some RPGs once and a while and think they can use IMs to help each other cheat. Little do they know that i intercept everything. My friend hosting the game was PISSED when I told him everyone was cheating.
