good VG maker

Post by madc0w »

Ok, does anyone know a good FREE game making system other than Gamemaker? cause i want to make an odyssey videogame for a project, but making a sidescroller in GM is too hard for me. I want to make something kinda like castlevania, but with less weapons and more basic.

Do NOT use RPG Maker for side scrollers...you'll be wasting your time.

I haven't used GM in almost a year so I pretty much forgot everything.

I need a sprite maker for very small sprites. 256-color bmps and pcx's files but I'd like them to look somewhat rounded almost 3d, what's my best option? Low res rendering? or is there a specific tool out there? How about a sprite archive? a font archive would be handy too.

I'm late, but I'm on the GBA homebrew bandwagon now. Two days ago I was doing a hello world and now I have two sprites moving around (one user controlled). Tomorrow they may begin to interract with eachother. They're lousy paint bmps pasted on them, if they were prettier, they'd make me look talented. :roll:

Nothing beats The GiMP for free image creation.

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to make sprites right is to hand-animate them. I don't like the ones from, say, Super Mario RPG or the new GBA games, where they're all made from 3D computer models. It just looks so... cheap, I guess would be the right word for it.

I'm not sure how they rendered the Metal Slug series, but they look great (especially the explosions). They could either be a shining example of sprites done right, or a huge exception to my sprite philosophy. :? Either way, they're great.

I don't care if it's free or not, but I think you're also overestimating my talent and the amount of time I want to put into graphics. Correct me if I'm wrong, but gimp's graphical creation abilities are right in line with paint's--hey, both are free! Because while it's also true that you can eventually make fine webpages with notepad, it lacks the ability to quickly make a semi-professional website.

This I can do vs. where I want to be:
Image--->Image
I'm thinking I have to render, unless there's something that will automatically darken or shade my edges slightly to make them appear "round" as in the second drawing
(yes I can draw a better ship than that, I was just using a quick arrow to hold the place in my program)

and by the way, anybody that says that GBA is hard to program for is a liar, it's a perfect platform. It just has a lot of appearantly undocumented rules that I'm stumbling through. Today I found out that I can't number my sprites with numbers that are too close together...for some undocumented reason...

gm has a simple sprite editor you might want or you could steal fireworks and animate in that.
