Should I make my own arcade?

Post by SpongeBuell »

ok, here's the dealio:

I'm helping my teacher with a mame cab, and the only cab we can find is one that is fully functional. We're going to have to gut it, and my teacher offered all the guts we aren't going to use (basically all of it) for partial payment. I could sell it on ebay, but I'm starting to realize that I could also make a fully functional second cabinet to go along with my MAME cab

If I did make another one, it would probably be an unconventional system, maybe even a large bartop or something weird like that, since I'll probably have a hard time getting a real cab.

What do you guys think?

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

why dont you build the teachers mame cab, then just keep the purchased cab/guts in one piece?

Buy the board and stuff then just put it aside until you can find a cabinet or see if you can fit it/intergrate it with your cab.

arcade boards are largely worthless.

you could sell the board on ebay, and get $5-40 for it, depending on the game, or you could build yourself a supergun console--both are good choices, but it's really not worth the trouble of building a whole new cabinet for it.

...or you could have some fun explaining to the police and school administration about how your teacher is building a mame cabinet in school...that would be my route.

he never said anything about it being done DURING school, or even at school. He said 'with a teacher'.

well if it's not in school, a teacher is inviting children into his private residence and encouraging them to break the law...I'm missing why that's any better.

I've gone to a few of my teacher's houses. Last time was to pick up some old pc stuff from my networking teacher that he had left over from college...in the early 80s :P

who said it is? but outwardly it seems inappropriate. The project is the illegal portion. Granted emulators are legal, but I don't think projects like this tend to turn out legal.

The comment was made from my typical 'I wish to ruin somebody' perspective. I can understand if you want to be special buddies with your teachers, but that's hardly where I come from.

I say make a second cabinet. Just take the purchaced one apart for a rebuild, and at the same time use it as a template for your MAME cabinet.

I want to build one someday. The only thing holding me back is how much room I have. For now I'll just settle with a lappy with a VGA-TV box.

And here I thought all the teachers in California were like Jamie Escalante.
