as i was leaving the office today with a freshly pilfered piece of ribbon cable, i was warned by someone that it might get too noisy and not work. should i be making every second wire a ground or something like that? is there a maximum distance i can go before the cartridge dosent work anymore?
also, i think im going to hack off the last inch of the board, and wire the cartridge slot dirctly to the chips... bad idea? (i have really tiny wire)

well as far as tracing the wires, i have a multimeter that beeps when there is continuity
. also, i already traced more than half the wires. it wasnt that hard. they are all on the top, and only go to two chips. finally, i dont think im going to go directly to the pins on most of them, since i only have to take it back to the edge of the board (which will soon be 1 inch further in). i think ill scrape off some of the green paint, solder directly to the trace, then put a nice blob of epoxy over each wire.

and nos, i was more worried about "internal" interference caused by two wires with high frequency signals being close together.
right now the cable i have is about 6 inches. i know im going to have to make it shorter, but i dont know how short. so. ill try 6, and tell you if it works. if not, ill check the connections and try 3. since i plan to just slap an ide female plug onto the end of my cable (its standard IDE ribbon, but with colours!), i can move the end connector in about 40 seconds with no solder. clever tim. clever.
