NO games from xbox work on 360 nativley. You need to buy a special disk to emulate that game's processor (the xbox) on the 360. The xbox and xbox360 both have a different type of processor, and thats why.

You'll probably have to buy the emulator just to make those ones work, and they won't be any better, because it is emulated. If anything, they'll probably be worse.

The problem isn't just the processor. A lot of XBOX games made direct calls to the NVidia video card used in the XBOX, so they have to emulate the video card.

there's also a different amount of pipes, or a different way of them being used if I recall correctly.

I've been following this pretty closely as well, so a couple notes:

- The emulators will be stored on the xbox360 hard drive. You can get the updated emulator for free via xbox live, burn your own disc from a download from xbox.com, or have them send you a cd (you must pay s&h)

- totokan and nos are right about the xbox games not being natively compatible. The xbox had intel processor and nvidia graphics, while the 360 has an IBM chip, and ATI processors. silly move as fat as backwards-compatibility goes, but probably a step in the right direction as far as gaming power goes.

- The list that Jeff linked to is just the games that microsoft has confirmed by hand as of right now. This list should grow, and include some pretty popular games that aren't on the list already (like mechassault 1-2 I hope :)). I also think they're saying that some games not on the list yet will play ok, they just haven't tested them yet.

- As far as the quality of the gaming, all the games on the list will run at 720p or 1080i, and support the anti-aliasing built into the 360. and online games still function perfectly, so you could be playing halo2 on your xbox against someone else playing it on the 360, and not know the difference.

Just my 0.02 :)

you know vb... I hadn't thought of it until you said that, but that does open up the door for mods on the 360. I'm sure someone will figure out a way to hack the xbox emulator. It could potentially replace a modded xbox itself! you'd just have a 360 with a hacked emulator, that would play roms off of a burnt disc. (I'm sure M$ has accounted for this, but it's fun to speculate :))

edit: here's another bad-news link concerning the 360 is anyone cares to read it --> http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/666/666229p1.html

I had been thinking about that earlier, but Microsoft isn't completely made up of idiots, so I'm sure they thought about that. They probably use some kind of weird algorithm that only allows real games to work.

They might have come up with something, but I wouldn't underestimate the power of gamers who would rather imulate old games on a system rather than their computers. They will come up with something...

nos, I totally agree with you... I was just having fun speculating. I highly doubt that anything like I mentioned would ever be developed, but it wouldn't surprise me if I read about it someday!

... oh, I'm gonna start a new post in here soon. It has to do with the xbox360, and how cruel irony can be to me :)

I'm telling you all now - the 360 is a pile of it. Read this:

Note: A software emulator is required for each original Xbox game you play on your Xbox 360â„¢ console. Please check back for more details as we approach the launch date.

EACH? As in every game requires something different to make it run? This will confuse the heck outta people! Cleary they designed the 360, THEN went back and said "ok how do we make it play old games?"

All past systems with backwards compatibility (7800, Genesis, PS2) use HARDWARE components of the old system in the new. Genesis used the Master System's CPU as it sound chip, PS2 uses the PS1 CPU as its I/O chip, etc.

Now personally I think backwards compatibility is worthless. I buy new systems to play new games not old ones. If I wanna play old games, heaven forbid I hook up the old system!

Still, if you say you'll have it then it should JUST WORK. None of this download BS. Don't you see? The 360 is gonna be like an XP machine. If it ASSUMES a internet connection at all times then they can release it as a piece of crap and "fix it later" with downloads/patches.

Seriously. Save your money for PS3 or Revolution. They're at least taking the time to get it right. 360's a rush job.

I think they should've just forgotten about the backwards-compatible stuff... they wouldn't look so bad. Could you imagine though if they did include the original xbox chips in the 360? They'd probably want $800 for it!
