What should I do?

Post by G-force »

I don't usually like to complain about my problems, but after some thinking I believe it's about time I did something drastic.

The problem is my school. Or rather my lack of school. See I have been been homschooled my entire life (and I am 17 right now). My mom is having a baby in december, and because of that we have stopped doing school to get the house in shape, help her cook, etc.

So pretty much my edcuation has gone down the drain. last year it was pretty good, I took chemistry and logic at a church, adn got A's in both! And I took algebra 2 and physics at home by myself. I didn't finish the books :(

So you see my problem. It's not that I'm not smart, I'm actually very intelligent, it's that I don't have a teacher. I tried teaching myslef, but it dosn't work. I jsut don't care enough to force myslef to do the problems. That and I have some trouble understanding it all every now and then. Also, my parents are the worst procrastinators in the world. They still haven't ordered all my school books! And this year I jsut started gemoetry (which is extremely easy since I was suposed to do it several YEARS AGO!)

I tried begging my parents to let me go to public school, they told me a definete "NO!".

The only thing I can think to do now is defy them by sneaking out in the morning and riding my bike to the school (about a 45 minute bike ride)

I just feel 100% screwed....

Have you thought of asking your parents to hire a personal tutor?

My friend had one to give him extra help with the subjects hes not so good at, but theres no reason why you cant get a tutor to do things in more depth

However, im not sure about the cost, but if your wanting help with everything then it could get a bit costly.Ask around and see if you cant get some prices. Speak to your parents and see what they think and whether its feasable.

I hope this has helped you

If your 17 then you should be in the leagal right to demand a proper education. I don't know much about that, hell I could be compleetly wrong but it's worth a shot. 17 year olds can chose where to live and this isn't very far off, call up the police leazon, they should be able to answer these questions, and hell your 17, you only have less than a year before you don't have to do what your parents tell you too and you can attend school, better watch out with that tho, they might wanna put you in something stupid like 8th grade... :?

Wow. Why don't they want you going to a public school? It would be to your benefit.

Maybe you should look for some private schools or night school (a high-school diploma class or something) a tutor, if you can afford it. I bet there's some sort of financial aid for that stuff, if necessary.

You have the right to a proper education. But you also have to listen to your parents. However they are not filling their parental obligation by not letting you get a proper education.

Night school is a good idea, plus you can go to college anytime in your life, My mom never went as teenager, but went back and got some qualifications when she was 38

Why don't your parents let you go to public school? I think that if you need to defy them to get the education that you want that you should go ahead and do it.

Just a little question about home schooling though. What is it like, do you have to go all day and can you take breaks and go on your comp when you wan't?

Its quite self explanatory really, its a school that happens at night, so you can take your lessons and still work full time, You dont normally go to Night school instead of High school. Its usually for re-diong bad grades or doing different subjects etc

I don't know why they are so anti-public school. I think they are scared about all the drugs, weirdos, and whatever other crap is there. Not too mention evlolution being taught. My dad really hates that. I think over protective is the word to describe them. They heard too many horror storys of kids going to public school after being homeschooled and turning into horrible people. I know a TON of people that were HS and the went to PS, they are fine! Better than before even, due to all the socializing! It's ridiculous.

Tutor would work I guess, except we don't have the money :( And they would just reply "Come to us if you have trouble." But they aren't even here 90 % of the time (I end up babysittin my siblings  )

The same problem with private/christian school. Not enough money$. that's why public school seems the best idea yet.

Night school? I've never heard of it. Anybody got more info?

Homeschooling used to be great. But once you get to high school, you really should go to pubic school. It's too easy to get distracted at home. I can get on my PC whenever I want, watch TV, listen to music, pretty much anything I want as long as I stay in my room. They no longer care what I'm doing as long as I am in my room.

This is a very common problem with homeschooling. I know a couple other familys where they don't really do school other than occasionally. That's why once you get to high school you really should go to public school.

Night schooling is going to a community college for classes on your free time.

G-force I hear ya brother. In the years before I went to public HS, I had lots of trouble concentrating on schoolwork (I have ADD.) YOu end up building an incredible amount of self-discipline (you might not think it's much, but it is a lot)
Public High school really is not that bad, depending on who you choose to make friends with. Pretty much everyone in my art class are potheads.
Thankfully, they came up with the honors classes which are my sanctuary during the day... I don't have to tune out the classrom noise just to get something done. A lot of the people in my honors classes (Biology, Precalculus) are very down to earth and some are even christians like me.

Do you have any close friends you could ask to talk to your parents about this? If they don't listen to you, they might listen to one of your friends that they respect.

Well you may have to sit them down and have them weight the pros and cons of; Public School, Privite Tutor, Night School or staying where you are. When people have to think things out rationally and not think with emotions they will be easier to compramise.

I hope things turn out good, we dont need someone leaving for simalar reason to why Luc left.

my parents used to think public schools were horrible druggy and violent and stuff untill they figured out they couldn't afford to send me to a private school. public schools are great, the one i'm at is so much better than the private grade school i went to. you should either:

a) talk to your parents about public school some more. but since they won't listen,

b) wait till next year when you don't have to listen to them and go to a public school and just be a year behind (and a year smarter  )

I just realized that this is the 4th time you've mentioned that you're home schooled today.

I was going to say a bunch of stuff but forgot most of it, so this is a pretty pointless post now.

BTW, where's lethalmeatball these days?

What, like in this thread? I only mentioned it once in another thread. Oh and thanks for the help

I've tried explaining it all to them, unfortunate for me, they don't work on logic. (imagine if they did! I could do anything I want, by manipulatiing logic!). I'll give it another shot though. Can't hurt.

@marshallh: You sound just like me man. (except for the ADD thing, I've never been tested for that, but I assume I don't have it). That's a good idea, asking my friends to talk to them, but all my friends are kinda...um...dumb. (if you read this guys, I'm just joking! ). So they wouldn't listen to them anymore than me. They are just so darn thick sometimes!

Oh yeah, I asked my mom about night schooling, she said "oh, thats even worse than public school!"..... Geez.

I think I either just have to do what school I can get and just live with it, or hypnotize the both of them. Hey the anarchist cookbook says how to do it, it must work!
