Need Math problem help a bit quick

Post by Motoman »

Yea i know this may seem a bit stupid but.....well i need help with a problem and its probably very simple its just that i have no idea how to do it. So if any of you could help me that would help. I need to know this cause we have presentations on the problems assigned to students. anyway here it is:

"If two of the four nonstraight angles formed by the intersection of FH and JK are selected at random, what is the probability that the two angles are congruent?"

This may be wrong, but if congruent means same angle, I believe it's right(sorry, I aven't done this stuff in about 2 years). There's a 1 in 3 chance. Say you pick angle 1. Angle 3 is the same as angle one, so unless you can pick angle 1 again, there is only 1 of 3 angles that is the same as angle 1. If you can pick angle 1 twice, which I suppose you can, then it's 2 of 4, or as spongey said, 1 in 2.

I'd have to say 50/50, or 2:1.

IIRC congruent=same measure.

50/50 or 2:1 sounds right, because there are only 2 outcomes:

-The angles are the same
or
-The angles are not the same

No the chances are NOT 25 or 6 to 4. :P
(good song though)

@nos: 1 to 3? We're only dealing with two angles at a time, so how can it be 3? ;)

1/2. there are 2 sets of verticle angles (equal angles on opposite sides of the intersection). that's half of the total 4

EDIT: 1/3

it's not 1/3 because you have to pick 2 angles, not the same angle twice

EDIT: i may be wrong, i'll figure it out

EDIT: OK, i got it. NOS is right. if you choose one angle, that leaves 3. only 1 of the 3 is congruent to the 1st angle to chose :D

well, your 50/50 logic is a bit off there, that's like saying "I'll either win the lottery or I won't"

Anyway, think of it like this: there are 2 different angle sizes, 2 of each. This gives us 4 to choose from. now, there are 2 taken at random, with your eyes closed. that means it's 2/4, or 1/2.

Opposite angles formed by an intersection have equal measures.

Angle 1 = angle 3
Angle 2 = angle 4

If angle 1 is picked as your first one, then you can pick either 1, 2, 3, or 4. If you pick 1 or 3, it's congruent, but 2 or 4 aren't. Therefore, you have a 2/4 chance of them being congruent. 2/4 = 1/2

i figured it out, it's 1/3. if you choose one angle, that leaves 3 (you pick 2 angles, not 1 angle twice). only 1 of the 3 is congruent to the 1st angle you chose

no, its 1/2, since its not Two DIFFERENT angles, its just two angles.
