Resetting the BIOS and reformatting the HDD would probably be enough, so you wouldn't have to set up a new BIOS. What are the specs for that computer?

the problem is i cant reset it. it has protected BIOS. And it wont boot off a different hardrive for some reason. I cant tell what the pecs are, but its a windows 98 with a pentium mmx and a lot of ram (i cant tell how much but it has four sticks) also, its a dell optiplex g5+

Have you tried openning(after unplugging) it and pulling the BIOS battery? After that's out for about a minute, the BIOS should be reset, passwords and all.

Since it requires a lan to boot, does it have a NIC with a boot on lan cable and locked bios?
The school where I had my networking class had that setup, it was actually the NICs that prevented the pc from booting.

no NIC, and reseting the BIOS doesnt help. Does anybody know how i would go about installing a new BIOS.

at gamestop/funcoland they had a genesis version 1 and about 10 games in the dumpster i was unlucky because i noticed it like the day after it rained

did you take it? the games might have still worked. Oh, and i found new BIOS on the dell website, so ill make a floppy tomorrrow at my friend's house

@Madc0w: I had to flash/upgrade the BIOS on my Dell GX1s. (upgraded from version A07 to A10) Basically you download a floppy image, make the disk, and boot from it and it will load and flash the BIOS.

about the Genesis: The console may have worked, depending on how long ago it was last plugged in. As long as the capacitors had discharged (shouldn't take longer than a couple hours) and there are no batteries on the board, you should be able to use it after you dry it off really well. After all, how did this keyboard here work again after I spilled coca-cola into it? (I took it apart, soaked the entire board in the tub, dried it, and put it back together.) Or my friend's laptop? (dropped it overboard on a canoe trip when it was running. The fan was ACTING LIKE A PROPELLER as it floated away. He grabbed it after it was immersed for about 10 seconds, pulled it out and it was STILL RUNNING! Completely responsive as though nothing happened! WARNING I don't recommend you try this!

(he wasn't exactly the most careful back then.) All I know is that I have the lappy now and it worked for a while. Then I guess it just gave up the ghost for no reason. (processor overheats a lot now, only runs for 15 minutes at a time.)

On the plus side it's a darn good charger for my portable battery, the battery that came with it!

Wow, that's quite amazing that it still worked! Remind me of that EGM test where they stood on a GBA, threw it, then finally, flushed it in a toilet. It still worked! I guess water mostly affects high voltage elctronics.

ok, i got back from my friend's house, and i figured out that i just need to install linux and it should work. I'll probably make the floppy boot disk at my friend's house on tuesday (yay no school!)

reminds me of my old amiga A1000 it sat outside for no less than SIX MONTHS, and still works like a champ, sittin outside gettin rained on and snowed on and to no ill effect, still boots and functions perfect, i dont have a keyboard tho, and i need to find more software, my discs are pretty much all crapping out gradually, they arent designed to hold data for almost 2 decades
