It could be the same problem I had.
On my NES it would flash black, then purple, then black, then another color over and over. It is the Pin Connector inside the NES. I just bought one off of eBay for about 8 bucks including shipping. Hopefully this helps.

if your friend is good at soldering and the book ships fast, it might be possible
Don't foget the parts that I'd have to buy. Nearby there is a Radio Shack, Circuit City, Gamestop, Wal-Mart, and a Craft Store (all in a little plaza area). I think I lucked out with all of those close to each other ...
