the buttons dont have to be in the exact place you want them, you can always rewire the buttons to put them in another location, its not hard at all.

did you put the polarized film layer on, without it you wont see anything; another thing is you could have messed up the lcd screen somehow

I'm fairly certain you won't find a step by step guide by any means, but i do know that you could probe in obvious places with a multimeter and see where the gameboy draws power from the batteries, its pretty obvious too, just check the leads from the battery compartment.
